"Goodnight Rae I love you" Daniel tells his 6 year-old daughter after putting her in bed

"Why couldn't mommy put me to bed"

"Honey, Mommy's not home"

"Sh-she's never home"

"I know baby I know"

"Can you have mommy come in my room later"

"I'll ask but I can't promise"

"O-okay well goodnight daddy I love you"

"I love you too"

Daniel leaves the room to see his wife passed out on the couch very clearly drunk, half naked, makeup everywhere streaking on her face

He sighs and picks her up bringing her into their room.

Too overwhelmed by her drunk scent he leaves her alone and goes to sleep with his daughter

"Mommy?" Rae asks

"No honey, it's daddy can I sleep with you tonight"

"Of course daddy I love you"

The next morning was the first of the last days that they would spend together

He was done with the countless nights that she would come home drunk and during the day barely spending any thought on her child

Daniel would call his best friend Jonah; who spent more time with Rae then her own mother would, asking him for help with what to do

So that day after he dropped Rae off at preschool and his "wife" if you could even call her that went to go to "work" he called Jonah for the unknowingly last time

Jonah told him he has to let go of his wife, after all they were together since high school and Daniel listened

He went to court and got some divorce papers

When he got home he filled them all out and set up a place for her to fill them

Luckily for him she came home early that day

To his surprise she was super willing to the divorce which of course broke his heart

For the next 2 years they worked out the divorce, giving Daniel full custody of Rae.

Daniel expected it to be 50/50 however, his now ex-wife demanded he have 100%

Unfortunately, Rae was in the room very aware of what was happening. And she knew exactly what her mother meant when she made sure she had no rights to see Rae.

Rae was absolutely heartbroken. Her own mother never wanting to see her again.

But she keeps it in. She doesn't tell anyone that she knows what was happening and no one not even Daniel knows that she feels hurt and betrayed

Although she doesn't tell anyone Daniel still sees it in her eyes

He remembers her used to be super bright blue eyes a perfect match of Daniels that have now faded

They are both broken but they will make it work until they are fully healed

And the person to heal them well who knows who that would be and how long it will take but I'm sure one day Daniel and Rae will be whole
