It's me again God,

As Christmas approaches, the appearance of various symbols associated with the birth of Jesus begin to be sung about in carols and seen as ornaments or on greeting cards.  One that has long been revered as an integral part of the Christmas story and often takes the prime position on top of the Christmas tree, is the angel. We don't often think or hear about angels throughout the rest of the year and so I think it would be good to take time to look at what Your Word tells me about them.

You made angels —they didn't always exist::

"You alone are the LORD; You have made heaven, The heaven of heavens, with all their host, The earth and everything on it, The seas and all that is in them, And You preserve them all. The host of heaven worships You."
‭‭Nehemiah‬ ‭9:6‬ ‭NKJV‬‬

"For by Him all things were created that are in heaven and that are on earth, visible and invisible, whether thrones or dominions or principalities or powers. All things were created through Him and for Him."
‭‭Colossians‬ ‭1:16‬ ‭NKJV‬‬

Angels are spirits:

"What role then, do the angels have? The angels are spirit-messengers sent by God to serve those who are going to be saved."
‭‭Hebrews‬ ‭1:14‬ ‭TPT‬‬

Sometimes they take on bodily form:

"The women were breathless and terrified, until the angel said to them, "There's no reason to be afraid. I know you're here looking for Jesus, who was crucified."
‭‭Matthew‬ ‭28:5‬ ‭TPT‬‬

"And show hospitality to strangers, for they may be angels from God showing up as your guests."
‭‭Hebrews‬ ‭13:2‬ ‭TPT‬‬

Three types of angels are mentioned in Your  Word—Cherubim, who guarded the garden of Eden —Genesis 3:24, Serephim who continually worship You —Isaiah 6:2-7 and Living Creatures who worship in front of Your throne —Revelation 4:6-8.

Lord Your Word does not say how many angels there are but there appear to be a lot of them!

"But you have come to Mount Zion, to the city of the living God, the heavenly Jerusalem. You have come to thousands upon thousands of angels in joyful assembly,"
‭‭Hebrews‬ ‭12:22‬ ‭NIV‬‬

In Your Word, only two of Your angels are named —Michael the archangel, (Jude v9) and Gabriel, a messenger:

"In the sixth month of Elizabeth's pregnancy, God sent the angel Gabriel to Nazareth, a town in Galilee, to a virgin pledged to be married to a man named Joseph, a descendant of David. The virgin's name was Mary."
‭‭Luke‬ ‭1:26-27‬ ‭NIV‬‬

Probably one of the most well known characteristics of angels would be their role in protecting people:

"When we live our lives within the shadow of God Most High, our secret hiding place, we will always be shielded from harm. How then could evil prevail against us or disease infect us? God sends angels with special orders to protect you wherever you go, defending you from all harm. If you walk into a trap, they'll be there for you and keep you from stumbling. You'll even walk unharmed among the fiercest powers of darkness, trampling every one of them beneath your feet! For here is what the Lord has spoken to me: "Because you have delighted in me as my great lover, I will greatly protect you. I will set you in a high place, safe and secure before my face. I will answer your cry for help every time you pray, and you will find and feel my presence even in your time of pressure and trouble. I will be your glorious hero and give you a feast. You will be satisfied with a full life and with all that I do for you. For you will enjoy the fullness of my salvation!""
‭‭Psalms‬ ‭91:9-16‬ ‭TPT‬‬

Thank You Lord for Your amazing provision in this way! Your angels are mighty in power, obediently doing Your will in every way:

"Praise the Lord, you his angels, you mighty ones who do his bidding, who obey his word. Praise the Lord, all his heavenly hosts, you his servants who do his will."
‭‭Psalm‬ ‭103:20-21‬ ‭NIV‬‬

Today I join Your angels in bringing glory to Your Name:

"Praise him, all his angels; praise him, all his heavenly hosts."
‭‭Psalm‬ ‭148:2‬ ‭NIV‬‬

As the days draw nearer to that time when we celebrate Jesus' birth, I will think of the good news the angel brought to the shepherds and I will join with the great company of angels who came to glorify You:

"An angel of the Lord appeared to them, and the glory of the Lord shone around them, and they were terrified. But the angel said to them, "Do not be afraid. I bring you good news that will cause great joy for all the people. Today in the town of David a Savior has been born to you; he is the Messiah, the Lord. This will be a sign to you: You will find a baby wrapped in cloths and lying in a manger."

"Suddenly a great company of the heavenly host appeared with the angel, praising God and saying, "Glory to God in the highest heaven, and on earth peace to those on whom his favor rests.""
‭‭Luke‬ ‭2:9-14‬ ‭NIV‬‬

In Jesus' Name,
Amen.
