Anybody in the spotlight as much as Elvis presley was, is bound to pick up a few nicknames along the way.

Elvis certainly acquired a number of nicknames during the early years of his career.

"The Hillbilly cat," "The Memphis flash," "ol' snake hips" and "Mr sideburns"

Among all of his nicknames, though, the two that have remained permanently are "Elvis the pelvis" and "The king of Rock n roll"

It all began in the summer of 1954, when 19 year old Elvis began performing on stage.

"When I first came on stage I was scared stiff. I was doing a fast type-tune, and everybody was Hollerin' and I didn't know what they were hollerin' at. Everybody was screaming and everything. Amd then I came off stage and my manager  (bob Neal) told me they were hollerin' Because I was wigglin' my legs....and so I went back out for an Encore and I did a little more. And the more I did, the wilder they got."
