There is no doubt that Elvis and his father were very close. They were devoted to each other and fiercely protective at all times.

But their relationship was subjected to many extreme tests down the years, from the struggle to make ends meet when Elvis was a child and the death of Gladys to the pressures that accompanied Elvis's life as a superstar.

Vernon didn't have it easy when he was growing up. But some say that he didn't go out of his way to make it easy for himself.

During Elvis's early years, people who knew the family said that the three of them were so close that they didn't appear to need anybody from the outside.

They spent their free time together singing in church or at home.

When Elvis was a teenager, Vernon bought a treasured old car a 1941 Lincoln coupè- that he all but handed over to Elvis.
