John's POV

The internet has been seeking change and justice for the death of George Floyd. I've reposted some videos with the platform I own and I can't feel but think words aren't enough anymore. I've stared at the time of a peaceful protest near where I live on my screen and thinking about how severe this situation has become. I would've never thought people of other races have to fight for basic human rights and it makes my blood boil.

I had to do something, so I quickly stood up and searched for some cardboard from the boxes I got with recent deliveries and got a marker. Simple, but to the point, I thought and just wrote BLACK LIVES MATTER in huge letters.

I heard my phone vibrate on my table and I turned around to pick it up. I read Jaren's name from my screen and unlocked the device.

Bear fists | 5:35 pm

nothing really, just thinking about going to a peaceful protest near where i live

Milkbag | 5:35 pm

you sure? have you seen the news about police spraying peaceful protesters with tear gas?

or shooting people with rubber bullets?

What? I jumped on Twitter and, low and behold, I saw gruesome pictures of people getting shot in the head with huge bullets.

Bear fists | 5:39 pm

don't worry, i'll be surely fine.

Milkbag | 5:40 pm

i hope so. if you get shot i'll shoot you to death.

John laughed at the last text from his best friend and they ended up chatting about nothing in particular until it was time to go to bed.

I woke up to my alarm and had a quick coffee before I walked out the door. I put on my facemask and brought a water bottle with me just in case.

As I got to where the protest should begin, there were hundreds of people already there. I didn't know anyone, but I felt a welcoming presence. Everyone had purpose to help stop systemic racism and I felt like I was a part of something that will change the world for the better. I smiled under my mask and raised my sign, yelling "Black lives matter!" and everyone cheered.

The march started and I saw cop cars everywhere. They were armed and I started to sweat nervously, remembering the Twitter pictures.

The protesters yelled "Say his name: George Floyd!" and I joined. The fact that we started to be circled in by police was terrifying and the crowd started to kneel. I joined them and we peacefully showed them our support to the people who died in their hands. Suddenly, I heard screaming and I stood up quickly. I saw the first line of the march getting sprayed with tear gas to stand down.
