On the Run

Helen surprised me with a comment as we walked towards the Nightwing: "Most Vampires do not learn pheromone control so early. Even Jessica did not, and I thought her to be a very quick student. It is a difficult skill since humans never control the pores of their skin. They cannot in fact. Except perhaps certain students of ultimate body control, and they mostly live in a monastery."

"All the credit goes to you on that." I replied honestly. "You are the one that kept telling me to get it under control. Jessica mentioned I would need to, but never really gave me the incentive."

Helen seemed to be fighting a smile and lost a little bit. The corners of her mouth twitched up. "No. No, I would suppose that she would not be the best teacher of that particular skill for you." She looked over at me as we walked. "However, I believe you just implied that I am not sexually attractive, despite all your blather about my breasts."

"No, I..." Before I could finish a reply, humorous or otherwise, Jessica heard us approaching and came out to meet us. When she registered our appearance, she was shocked. "What the hell happened to you two?"

"Nothing good, dear." Helen said, flipping of dried mud off her torso with some drama. The chunks flew dead level until they hit a fence. She looked at me and sternly added: "We will finish that discussion later."

I shrugged, then winced at a shot of pain. "Tell you soon as we can, Jessica. We don't have any time right now. We need to pack up. Stow the 'Nightwing' in the shed. We are on the run again. I need to call Danny and Lori on a burner would you mind firing one up, please?"

While Jessica got me a phone, I told Helen "Look: You are a stone fox, alright? Not kidding here. Sexy as all hell, in a classic way. You completely are. I may have been trying to distract you but it is based on truth. Your breasts are perfect, for YOU. It is only just that I am nothing like those creeps in the airplane is all. Why I put it that way. Even if you were not a Vampire, I would never touch you, awake or unconscious, without invitation."

Helen gave me an unreadable expression: "No, you are not. For one thing, those 'creeps' as you call them are going to soon be very dead."

The uninflected way she pronounced certain death made me shiver.

Jessica gave me a phone and Danny's number was already punched in. She then sped off and started throwing things on the King size bed. I stood in the open part of the cabin as she packed things in a rush and listened to my call. Helen rummaged through the piles as they appeared.

"Hello?" Came the familiar voice over the burner earpiece. I knew Jessica and Helen could hear it as well.

"Danny?"

"Hey dude. What's going down? Did you...."

"Yeah: Listen, no time. As soon as some very bad people put two and two together, you guys are probably not safe at my house. Our plan imploded. Big time. You need to get out. Pack. Now. Go hide. Use cash. Grab that pile of little phones I have in the kitchen drawer and run. Grab my cats if you can, but go. I'll be in touch. It's bad Danny. Drug lord bad. I have all those numbers. I'll call you. Get gone."

Danny heard my voice and my edge of panic and did not question or doubt me "Holy Shit Man... OK. Whatever. We'll do it." Then off the phone, he said to Lori "Lori, start packing some stuff. We gotta go. Fast. I don't know. Just trust me. Or actually, trust Adrian. Get packed..."

Jessica stopped what she was doing long enough to interject into the call. "Have them head north. Meet us in Waco."

"Danny. Head to Waco. I don't know where in Waco yet. Go North. I'll call you on a burner with details. I don't know which one. Keep them all close. I'll call all the numbers and one of them will ring. Go, my friend. Go."
