Chapter Three | Dart

"How was trick-or-treating?" I looked up from my bed and snapped my book shut. Every night, I write about what I do every day. It's the only thing that I actually like doing.

"Okay," I slowly draw out, my Mum leans on the side of the door.

"Where's Maxine?" Mum questioned, looking at the other empty bed and I shrugged.

"Bathroom, maybe." I guessed. "What are you doing here, Mum?"

"Nothing, just checking on how my daughters are doing," Mum answered. "So, have you made any new friends yet, sweetie?"

I shrugged. "Kind of." My mind thinks back to Dustin, Lucas, Mike, and Will. Though I don't think Mike likes either of us which annoys me; what did I ever do to him?

"Kind of?" Mum repeats with a raised eyebrow. "What does that mean?"

"Kind of." I repeat and Mum sighed. I've never had a good relationship with my Mum.

"Mum? What are you doing here?" Max asked and Mum turned around to face her daughter staring up at her.

"Why is it such a surprise that I'm here in my daughters' bedroom?" Mum questioned the two of us and we didn't say anything. No one ever comes to our bedroom, usually, they just yell or something to get us.

Mum sighed.

"Okay, well, you can leave now." Max says rudely and pushed past Mum before walking towards her bed and she turned on the light beside it.

"Can't I spent some quality time with my daughters?"

"I need to talk to Aspen in private," Max replied sharply. Max met mum's eyes. "Please, can you leave."

Mum pressed his lips together. "Fine. Okay." She then turns around and shuts the door and I looked over at Max.

"Did you need to tell me something?"

Max shakes her head and brings out a book. "No. Just an excuse for Mum to leave."

"I still don't get why they call him zombie boy," my sister tells Lucas the next day at school while we walk down the hallways. "I mean, I get it. He got lost in the woods for a week or something, but why is he a zombie? Because everyone thought he was dead?"

"Yeah." Lucas nodded. "I mean, we had a funeral for him and everything."

"After a week?" I questioned.

"Well, see, some other kid drowned at the quarry," Lucas tried to explain. "We thought it was Will because his body was super decomposed."

"What?" Max demands and stopped Lucas. I can't believe this actually happened last year. "Okay, that's not funny."
