1.3 million Earths could fit inside the sun, an average-sized star.

There are more living organisms in a teaspoonful of soil than there are people on earth.

Earth is the only planet whose name in English is not derived from a Greek-Roman God.

The term “meteor shower” was invented by astronomers who observed one of the most impressive displays of this phenomenon back in 1833. It was a Leonid meteor shower. This particular meteor shower happens every 33 years, so in 2028 we will have an opportunity to enjoy a fascinating night of stargazing.

Satellites can be very small, 10 cm (4 inch) cubes, or very large space stations, the largest being the International Space Station.

The Moon is not round, but egg shaped.

Your weight on the moon is 16.5% of your weight on earth.

Even though Mercury is the closest planet to the Sun, it is not actually the hottest. Mercury does not have any atmosphere meaning that this planet is only hot in the daytime when it is directly facing the Sun. At this stage temperatures can rise to 425°C but at night the planet’s temperature can drop down to a freezing -180°C. Venus is the hottest planet. Its thick clouds trap the Sun’s heat causing Venus to be a sizzling 500°C all of the time!

Thankfully, what we call “shooting stars” are not stars. If it were, it would be very bad for life on Earth, or, actually, there would be no Earth since stars are much bigger than planets and would destroy our planet. Shooting stars are meteors: dust or parts of asteroids or comets. When they enter the Earth’s atmosphere, they burn up at a temperature over 3,000 degrees Fahrenheit. Their speed is up to 26 miles per second.

To our eyes, in space, the sun would appear white, not yellow.
