Someone was touching my face. I couldn't identify who but they soon stopped and I asked in my dream-like state, "Loki?" Was he out of prison yet? Hm... I tried to avoid wincing as it only made the pain in my face worse. I opened my eyes but... something was pressed over my left eye... That wasn't there before. I soon realized a healer was standing over me, making sure I was okay. It then occurred to me that something was horribly wrong. "W- What happened? The Queen-"
"I'm sorry, my lady," The healer looked down. "I'm afraid the Queen has passed."
I took in a deep breath. All right. I wouldn't cry. No. I already cried. I didn't need to again. "I understand... And me? Why... Why am I not dead?"
"Prince Thor arrived in time to scare them off. I am truly sorry, my lady. You were struck before they escaped. I'm afraid we won't know if you've lost your sight until after we can remove your bandages."
That explained the pain. I wondered if Loki was even half aware of what had happened. About Frigga... about me. "May I return back to my room?" If Loki or Thor wanted to find me that's where I would be. As soon as she gave me permission, I was out of there and back to the privacy of my room.
I took the time to view myself in the mirror. My hair was a mess but I at least appreciated how they cleaned me up before putting the wrappings. I sighed and brushed my hair as neatly as it was before getting injured. I hoped desperately my eye would be okay from the horrible injury.
"It was your job to guard her!" I turned swiftly finding Thor standing angrily at my door. He had every reason to be angry with me... But he was pissed. It honestly terrified me as he approached me slowly, backing me into a wall.
I felt a horrible amount of guilt over failing at my job. But Thor didn't seem to understand that. I tried. And I almost died to avenge her. "Thor..." My voice cracked, "I'm sorry... I tried-"
"Tried," He growled as he gripped the collar of my dress and shoved me into the wall I was backed into. I couldn't hold back my tears at his anger. "If you would have tried she would still be here! Someone like you should have never been accepted as my mother's personal guard."
"I was here for you, idiot!" My face hurt at my emotional expressions, but I couldn't help it. "She accepted me as one of her own! She trusted me!"
"And look where that got her," He replied coldly, clearly grief-stricken and looking for someone to blame, "I guess that says something about you, Midgardian."
I was only part Midgardian... but I could tell he meant it all as an insult to me, making me feel worse. I shouted angrily, "Go to your stupid mortal girlfriend, Thor! Go yell at her for putting Frigga in danger in the first place! Go tell her you're so glad I almost died along with Frigga just so the weak little human could live just a few more years!"
"You will not speak of Jane in such a way, traitor!"
Traitor? Is that what I was for risking my life for Frigga? I was a traitor for almost dying beside my Queen?
"GET OUT!"
My tear-filled eye widened as I looked over Thor's shoulder at Loki who just arrived. He was pissed. He was loathing. He was more horrifying than Thor. But at the same time, I was grateful because I knew he was there to help me. With the anger he was displaying and the green magic that wrapped around his arms, I had no doubt he could probably fight Thor and win at the immediate moment.
"Brother, this does not-"
"Hel, Thor! She just went through a traumatic event and you're acting like a monster! What's worse, she just witnessed an actual monster kill her mentor, our mother." Loki tore him away from me, leaving me crying with my back against the wall. "Now, get out, Thor."
I waited anxiously before Thor finally left. Loki was angry, it was obvious, but I was surprised when he absorbed me in a hug. I dropped to my knees with him around me. I was breathing heavily as he cried onto my shoulder. Loki was crying. Hesitantly, I wrapped my shaking arms around him, passing my hand through his hair. The contact had calmed us both down, but I was still anxious. "I'm sorry, Loki. I'm sorry. I tried-"
"It's not your fault. If Thor was any better then he would have been there too. You are a true goddess."
He was trying to make me feel better, but he was still crying. I pulled back slightly, looking at him with my one good eye as I wiped the tears from his face despite how shaken up I was. "I'm sorry for your loss, Loki. Please... talk to me."
The tears didn't stop as he searched every inch of my face. He finally replied quietly. "I couldn't stop it. I promised I wouldn't let you get hurt. I promised I would protect you. I promised I would be here for you. I broke all of those promises, love. You got so hurt when Thor locked me away, I couldn't be there for you."
He held my face in his hands and I flinched slightly as he began to trace the bandages as if he knew exactly where the cut lined up. "Loki... Don't promise things you can't keep. But listen to me now, it wasn't your fault. If Thor wasn't being such an oaf then you would have been free and I would have been with Frigga like I was supposed to be."
"(Name)," He fell to silence, just looking at the bandages over my eye.
"I'm okay." He shook his head at my simple statement and I explained, "They don't know if I lost my vision."
He pulled me closer to him, hiding my face in his shoulder. "You'll be fine. I'll heal you. I'll make sure you're okay."
There was then a knock at the door before it cracked open slightly. Loki quickly wiped away his tears and turned. Sif was standing at the door. She immediately knew what was going on, but she still had to say, "Thor is ready. We'll protect (Name) while you're gone."
He nodded tensely and hugged me once more. "Do not fret for me, love. I'll return and give you all you could wish for."
I tried to give an amused smile to him as he stood. "How could I worry over someone who just kicked the God of Thunder out of my room?" He gave me a small smile, glad that I didn't lose my humor as I was trying to make fun of the situation despite our pains. He then left the room to deal with the disease that was contaminating Thor's mortal woman.
