Chapter 14
"I was a hitman. I'm not anymore."
I stared at him, my breath caught in my throat. He turned away from me, his eyes were impassive, emotionless. It was the first time I'd ever seen them like that.
"When I ran away to Zanzibar, I had nothing. I didn't have a job or a home and I knew no one. I was sulking in a bar, not quite unlike the one you met me in, where I met Muuaji.
"He spoke to me of a world of wealth. A world where your every wish was at your beck and call. You sat on a throne of glory and riches. I would have everything. It was everything I had dreamed of while I had been skinning fish in my village. I couldn't resist his charm.
"I said yes to his proposal and not innocently either. There's no legal glory in Tanzania and Muuaji means killer in Swahili. I wasn't stupid, but I was desperate.
"He introduced me to a cold, cold world. Muuaji was ruthless and merciless. One wrong step was fatal. He started me small, drug trafficking throughout the country and various robberies, but I watched innocent girls get kidnapped and be shipped away to the highest bidder. I watched men get tortured and killed. But I was too deep in. It was kill or be killed.
"And that's what I did. Muuaji had me become his personal hitman. Anyone who wronged him or was a liability was killed—by me. It was quick and it was easy. It was silent and it was simple." He paused. He still wasn't looking at me, staring into the distance. "But I knew it was wrong." Something in his voice had changed. Before when he was speaking his voice had sounded raw and pained, but now his voice was flat, almost dead. "So I ran away, but they caught me. And suddenly I was the target for the new hitman. But traitors were treated way differently than liabilities. I was tortured. They beat me and burned me and took turns raping me before tying me up and throwing me in a boat. They drove out to the middle of the sea and they tossed me in the ocean.
"I think it was luck I was found. A fisherman found me and rowed me to shore. He saved my life, but he had no idea what kind of a life he was saving. I'm not sure if I should have been saved.
"Felix found me on that beach and told me to run. I did it without question, but I should have known that Felix had taken my place in the gang. Eventually he gave away his relationship to me and that I was alive and that's when they started searching for me. I found all of this out on that cruise. If I had known beforehand, I never would have let you be in the same country as him.
"My father found out I was alive too and started searching for me as well. When I found him in that club, I told him I could never go back to Tanzania and that he shouldn't either. Due to Felix and I, he and my mother are just one wrong move from being one of their hitman's targets. I should know, I killed family members of liabilities all the time.
"That was Muuaji's second in command that found me here. After Felix found me I knew it wouldn't be long which is why I left. I couldn't have you there when I was found. He says I have 30 days which means I have to be a lot more careful. We can't go into any countries where Muuaji and the Zanzibars have any sort of control. Luckily I know all of that, so we should be fine."
"I'm sorry--we?" I stared at him in disbelief. Not just about what he'd revealed to me, but that he expected that after all of that, I was still enough of an idiot to keep going after him. No. Fucking. Way. "Sebastien, there's no was in hell you could get me to go anywhere with you. They're after you not me, and you said it yourself, I shouldn't be there when they find you. And they will find you."
"Raegan, you have no reason to trust me. I lied to you because I didn't know you and I thought it was safer that way. And frankly, I lied to you because I care about you more than anyone I've ever met, and I knew you'd run if I told you, and I couldn't bear it. I was so selfish for that and now I fucked everything up really badly. They're not after me anymore, Raegan, they're after you. They told me I have 30 days to bring you in before they kill me and you. But they're not just going to kill you, Raegan. They're going to hurt you in ways you've never imagined, hurt you until you've died in all aspects except a stopped heart. The only way you stand a chance is to stay with me, until a bigger threat comes along. And don't you worry, a bigger threat will come along and they'll forget all about you. Although we have to leave now. Muuaji has a huge control in Spain and staying here is like playing Russian roulette with death. Come on, Raegan, stay with me to survive."
