when joshua got out of the jet, he was mesmerized.

the city was absolutely beautiful. they landed at night, the city's lights shining in arrays of different patterns and areas to perfectly light up the busy city. the people seemed calm and collective, kind and welcoming. it was peacefully perfect, something he admired.

being in a different culture is what made it feel different. life was going to be different now, no matter how much joshua wanted to deny that. he accepted the change and moved along with the flow.

his family called his attention, to which he jumped and turned around. he got stuck in a daydream as he watched all the cars and people along the streets and sidewalks, shops placed along the sides.

"let's go, shua. we need to drive to our new house." his mother's sweet, calming voice called to him, taking his arm and making him walk to a taxi as they took it to their new neighbourhood.

it was a nice, quiet neighbourhood. the street lights dimly lit the roads that went straight to their new one in the near back. it was a pretty white tri-level house with flowers decorating the front porch and rock trails from the driveway. a house joshua would definitely buy and live in, which is what he liked about it so much.

excited, joshua hopped out of the car and ran to the top. he admired it all as he waited for his parents to unlock the door. he loved the sweet, innocent look the house gave off from the outside, even if it didn't look the same on the inside, he was okay with that.

he watched his parents walk up the driveway with smiles, happy to see their son excited about the whole event. they put the key in the socket, turning it and unlocking the door. the door opened, revealing the interior of the house.

it was perfect. a nice sized living room with soft carpet for his feet, a big kitchen with plenty of cooking space and a nice sized dining room. the door that led to the backyard was a sliding door, just like their old house. he went outside, and the backyard was huge. it was fenced by the number of trees that extended into a big forest, a place he definitely needed to explore. he went back in, making a mental note to check it out later.

he went to the second level with two bedrooms, one was nice and small and perfect for a little kid, and the other was a bigger room with a window seat and a view of the forest. he knew from when he first stepped into that room that it was definitely going to be his own.

the room all the way at the end of the hall was the bathroom, a small yet cozy one that had everything a bathroom would need. a tub, toilet, shower, cabinet, and even a shelf to place things like towels.

satisfied, joshua walked down the stairs and down to the lower level. it had a big area for another living space, and down the hallway was the master bedroom. it was luxurious almost, and humongous. the bathroom was nice too, with a big shower and a separate bathtub. joshua was happy for his parents to have such a luxury, but still slightly jealous at what they get.

that was okay, though. he was happy with how the house looked. the change was a positive one, and he couldn't wait to begin his life.

the next day is when the moving truck arrived with their items. they spent the late morning and early afternoon bringing in boxes and pieces of furniture into the house and placing them into the right rooms. it didn't take as long as intended, and before joshua knew it they were all moved in.

lastly was his own room. he had saved it for last so he could spend as much time on it as he needed. it was going to take a while to decide how he wanted everything set up, and it wouldn't be just a few hours. it would take weeks for him to be satisfied.

he started with his bed, placing it in the corner to give him more room space. he started by taking out all his important things, like his camera and photobooks, along with his notebooks and guitar.

besides photography, joshua loved to sing. he had notebooks full of lyrics and songs he made and a notebook of music for it to play on his guitar. it was his second favourite hobby, but photography always was his first priority. they were the two main things that he did, and it could be seen through his room design. it was usually plain in colour, keeping his things white and simple. but when it came to decoration, he had plenty of plants, pictures, and music-related items around his room. joshua had pictures of his photography with the awards displayed from his class when he won competitions. collections of bass clef and treble clef designed arts in his room, usually above where he places his guitar on the stand.

it was simple, yet cozy and meant absolutely everything to the owner. joshua was satisfied.

he placed his bed on one corner, his desk in another, and his guitar in the last one. the fourth corner was covered by the door, so he didn't put anything in it. paintings and awards decorated the white walls, and plants decorated his desk where he had his notebooks and a few drawing utensils. he even had a music stand alongside his guitar.

joshua walked back and admired what he had done so far. it wasn't perfect yet, but it also wasn't finished. it was getting late and he was getting unmotivated. he checked the time, his phone clock displaying 11:25 pm. joshua laid down, falling asleep almost instantly.

joshua spent the next few days preparing and arranging around his room, finally getting it to a point where he enjoyed how it looked whenever he stepped in. all the items were set up in the house, and they even got to shop in stores to look for other things. his korean started to get better as he communicated more and eventually people stopped thinking he was just a foreigner.

one day, joshua was sitting on the couch, watching some television when he heard a knock on his door. it was quiet, and at first, he didn't hear it. but when it came again, he realized it and quickly sprung up from the soft couch and ran to open the door.

it was a boy who looked around his age, holding a small container. he had baby pink hair and wore a gentle but bright smile.

"hello! you must be the new neighbours. welcome to the neighbourhood! i brought you some cookies if you'd like them." he looked down shyly before extending his hands to display the container. joshua smiled and replied, "why thank you, come on in." he stepped aside to let the boy inside.

"oh, thank you." he entered, looking around the home. "what's your name?" he asked, handing him the container to take.

"my name is joshua, yours?" he returned the question, finally taking the container and leading him over to the kitchen to eat them. "we can eat these together, nobody is home so i don't mind the company."

"oh cool!" he smiled, sitting at the table with joshua. "well hi joshua, nice to meet you. my name is chan. lee chan." chan stuck out his hand, joshua taking it and smiling.

"well nice to meet you too, chan. i have a pretty cute neighbour, don't i?" he chuckled, taking out a cookie to eat. he could see chan blush a little before taking one as well.

"i guess we both do then," he laughed. "are you going to the new school this year? maybe i will see you there."

"yeah, i am." joshua sighed. "is it a good school?"

"i would say so, compared to other ones at least." chan began. "but you won't have to worry too much, the people are pretty chill. just be prepared to deal with the annoying ones."

"oh trust me, i know how to deal with annoying people," he said. "that's all i knew at my old school."

the two talked about school and about joshua living in america, then about chan and his life. it turns out chan was a senior as well, even though he looked a lot younger. it was around 5:00 pm when joshua's parents came home, and joshua introduced his newly made friend.

as he was beginning to leave, chan smiled. "if you ever need help, feel free to ask me. i'll always be next door!" and with that, he left to go back to his house. joshua nodded as an answer, watching him leave before shutting the door and going back to sit on the couch.

with the newly gathered information, he was ready to start his day of school tomorrow. it was shocking how he already started so suddenly, but he was ready to kick school's ass and graduate so he could pursue his dreams.
