Together, they decided to 'save the world' by stopping the war between humans and merpeople.

Hai Hung died while protecting Maria from his own kind and Maria grieved over his death. Maria was determined to fulfill Hai Hung's dying wish but she had failed to convince both the humans and merpeople to stop the war, eventually leading the world to its destruction.
