Pale petals

Many centuries ago
Ithaca was especially beautiful today, I'm not sure why, but mamá always says 'Min amfisviteíte tin omorfiá tis fýsis an apofasísei na sas deíxei ta alithiná tis chrómata' which means 'don't question nature's beauty if it decides to show you its true colours'.

I might be only 14 but I know not to question fate when the gods are working with you, I rushed through the island completing my chores "Lorelyn, min xecháseis ti syllogí xýlou gia tous theoús í ta térata tha se pároun apó emás (Lorelyn, don't forget about the wood gathering for the gods, or the monsters will take you from us)" I smiled as I skipped around putting out the washing "Nai mamá (yes mama)"

Once I was done gathering wood and praying, I fled to the hills were several of my friends and I would meet but then I got distracted as always. I found a rose and couldn't help but admire the petals along with the fountain ripples To "teleftaío prépei na trofodotísei ta skyliá! (Last one there has to feed the dogs!"

I sprung up joining my crew as we raced up the hill. Thankfully I wasn't last but Rhea, my closest friend, was. She also had a phobia of the hounds, I would do it for her. I like to believe that those creatures were more afraid of me than I was of them.

"Rhea prépei na taḯsei ta skyliá! (Rhea has to feed the dogs!)" I stood as they started to laugh and tease my friend "Tha to káno. (I'll do it.)" all eyes were pinned to me, people thought because I was a girl, I couldn't do brave things but I lived to proof people wrong.

As they started to cackle again, I strolled down the hill towards the beasts. I could hear them telling me to 'Na stamatísei (stop)' and 'ela piso (come back)' but I chose not to listen, I climbed into the cage with the dogs who were already snapping at me "Ochi! (No!)" I didn't have much experience with dogs but I'd done this before and clearly made it out alive, so I could do it again...right?

I tossed the bag of meat into the middle of the pen and watch them tear at it like cannibals on a dead corpse. Just as I was over the fence, the guard came out spotting me immediately "Esý ekeí! Páfsi!(You there! Halt!)" I froze for a second before sprinting out of there apologising "Lypámai kýrie (I'm sorry sir)"

I stumbled as I reached my friends laughing and congratulating me except Alesandro who just folded his arms sulking in his own pride "O parakaló! mólis ékane ti zoí zontaní. ítan tycherós, aftó eínai ólo (Oh please! She barely made it out alive. She's lucky, that's all)"

I strode up to him confidently "Énas tycherós tha to éferne mésa kai éxo chorís na to dei o frourós. oi theoí prépei na me efcharistoún símera? (A lucky person would of made it in and out without being seen by the guard. the gods must favour me today?)"

I watched his posture soften slightly "Nai, sígoura, ísos? ó, ti epipléei to skáfos sas (yea, sure, maybe? Whatever floats your boat)" I knew he had a slight crush on me. I couldn't help but smile at his cover up.

Rhea started checking me over intensely, I stopped her when she started checking my cheeks cupping them, I gently took her hands away "Eímai kalá, sas ypóschomai (I'm fine, I promise you)" her arms flailed around as she expressed her unnecessary concern

"Ti gínetai an den eíste? Giatí me sózeis étsi? (What if you're not? Why do you keep saving me like that?)" I laughed as I sat on the floor "giatí kanénas állos den tha to kánei (because no one else will)"

All our group ever did was have fun and challenge each other, but it was what brought us bliss and ignorance towards the fact me lived on a marooned island in the middle of Greece and we'd probably never see anything else. It was our way of life. Eventually we got called in by our parents but the day was good while it lasted, and it did last.
