August 10
John POV

I wake up in a room that I thought was the infirmary, but quickly realized was a house, given the furniture, window, and comfortable bed. I look to see my rifle resting on the wall. I get up and look out the window and I know I'm dreaming now. Either that, or they sent me back to England. There's beautiful green trees, a quaint little garden and a... small little dog. It's cute. I turn and see a map on a table. I take a look at it. It's not one I've seen before. A map of some... planet... called "Remnant".

That convinces me I'm dreaming

That convinces me I'm dreaming. That is until I feel a quick stabbing pain in my side. That's when I realize, I'm no longer on earth. I hear voices from downstairs. I assume these are the people who helped me. I don't go downstairs, though. I just sit down from the shock of not being on earth anymore. On the bright side, that means I don't have to fight in the war anymore. That's a big pro. Con, will I ever see earth again? Will I see my family again? Is Grant alive? Will the war be over if I ever get back?

???: Oh, you're awake.

A girl about my age stands in the doorway. Her sudden appearance startles me so much that I jump back and put my hand on my sidearm. She raises her arms as a show of peace. I just take a deep breath and remove my hand.

Me: Sorry...
???: It's fine... I would have done the same thing in your position.

I sit down on the bed and feel a pain in my side.

???: Woah, easy. You had some debris in your side.

Hmm. I don't want to freak these people out. Telling people I'm from another world could cause widespread panic. I've seen what that can do.

Me: I was transporting supplies to...

I look at the map for a place to name to sound authentic... I find a place labeled "Vaccuo" that looks like a desert that could use supplies.

Me: To Vaccuo.
???: ...Really? Did something explode and you fell overboard?
Me: Yeah, then I landed on the beach, and blacked out.
???: The beach?

Crap.

Me: All I remember is sand, then blacking out.
???: fair enough. You were on the edge of a river. Must've been sucked in by the river current.
Me: Yeah. Anyways, thank you.
???: No problem... sooo, what's your name?

I just assume this is for purposes of... some sort of insurance. There's also the fact that these people saved my life also gives me the incentive to tell some truth.

Me: John Fish.
???: Ruby Rose... so, are you training to be a huntsman? I mean, that outfit doesn't look like any military I've seen. And all the police dress the same.

The bloody hells a huntsman? Some sort of best of the best group? I might have to go with it.

Me: Yes I'm training to be a huntsman.
Ruby: Wow. So am I... I'm training at Signal. Where are you from?

I notice another label that says "Oscuro" so I suck it up and bloody deal with it.

Me: Oscuro...
Ruby: Oh, so you're from Vaccuo?
Me: Sure...

I look at something on the dresser from across the room. A red rectangular object.

Me: What is that?
Ruby: What, my Scythe?
Me: You use a scythe for combat?
Ruby: Is that odd?
Me: Eh, we just have little to no scythe users in Oscuro.
Ruby: Oh. I guess that makes sense.
Me: It looks like it's got a scope on it.
Ruby: Oh yeah, it's also a gun.
Me: A close quarters weapon and a ranged weapon crossed into one?
Ruby: Is that not common in Oscuro?
Me: No, we go for a more... direct approach when designing our weapons.

I motion to my Lee Enfield, which I had no hand in designing.

Ruby: Oh.

A few moments later, Miss Rose brings me downstairs and introduced me to her sister, Miss Xio Long, and Mr. Xio Long, their Father. They asked me how I washed up on the side of the river, and I told them the same story I told Ruby. Of course I added more details for Mr. Long's sake. Something about a gas leak and a bloody dumb smoker who failed to notice. The news was playing on some sort of device that shows moving pictures. It showed, and this is absolutely true, it's too perfectly timed to be false, a supply ship on its way to Vaccuo, but sank off the coast of Patch. They offered me food, since it had been two days since they found me. Mr. Long had told me that I had told me that they found me with minor shrapnel wounds in my chest. Must've been from the German artillery. Ms. XioLong, Yang, asks me a question that I have no cover up for.

Yang: So, that's a nice Dust crystal you've got.
Me: Dust crystal?
Yang: Right, Vaccuo. Not a lot of Dust.

I hold up my gem in case that's what she's referring to.

Me: You mean my lucky charm?
Ruby:... Uhh, sure.
Me: I found it when I was little. I had no clue what it was, neither did my... parents... where did these blue seams come from?

I look at my gem, or I guess Dust crystal, and notice strange blue markings.

Yang: They weren't there before?
Me: No. That's... odd.
Tai: Hm... Y'know, I actually know a guy in Vale who takes an... interest in stuff like this. Yang, he works at Beacon, so you can take Mr. Fish with you to meet him.
Yang: Alright. Me and Ruby have to go to Vale to get ready anyways.

I stand in line with Yang and Ruby at the docks. Then Ruby looks like she just remembered something.

Ruby: Oh. John, do you have any Lien? Or did you lose it in the explosion?

I'm just going to go out on a limb and assume Lien is the currency in this world, and since I only have 5£ in my pockets, I just give a logical answer.

Me: I must've lost it in the ship. I couldn't find it this morning.
Yang: That's fine. I got you covered.
Me: Thanks, Yang.

I should probably find some work so I can pay her back at some point.
We get on the ship and head towards this "Vale". As we sail I look out towards the sea. It kind of reminds me of when I shipped out when war first broke out. Sailing across the English Channel, joking about the hell we stupidly signed up for.

Maybe this person that Mr. Long was talking about can help me get back to Earth. But I haven't known peace in two years...
Maybe I should enjoy my time here.

Away from war.
