Chapter 5: Sweating Bullets

Ezra POV

I trudged solemnly towards the King’s office. I had always thought of him as a kind and generous man because after all, he was great friends with my parents Zander and Maria. They had always shown Xavier the upmost respect, as had I. He had never uttered an unkind word about his precious daughter’s best friend. So why had I been so worried?

Perhaps it was the fact that I was secretly in love with his daughter, or maybe the fact that I has kissed her just the other day. Shit! If he had known about that I was fucked. There was no way he would have embraced it, being as he was so overly protective of Lianna and only went by the rules.

My palms were sweaty and my hands shook as I gently knocked on the door. I was sweating bullets, heavy fear filled bullets.

Why was I so frightened? Well, he was the King, her father and most of all a vampire who could have ended my life in a split second. Enough said! He beckoned to me to have entered his office and I followed suit, albeit begrudgingly.

“Good afternoon Your Highness.” I bowed and put forth my best confidant and selfassured tone although I had secretly unraveled on the inside.

“Ezra, it’s nice to see you. Please, call me Xavier. Your Highness is too formal. I used to change your diapers you know.” He smiled and chuckled at an errant memory. Wow… that was so not comforting. I’m sure he had meant it to be, but it really had the opposite effect. I shuffled nervously toward a chair that faced him and took up residence there.

“My father said you wanted to see me Your… Xavier. What is it that you need?” I asked nervously as I tried with all of my power to have put up the walls around my emotions that I so often used when I was around Lia. It was not necessary, as he had no powers like hers, but it comforted me none the less.

”It has come to my attention… that some ‘unsavory behavior’ has taken place.” He looked slightly annoyed as he spoke. Shit! I almost pissed myself at his words. He knew and I was about to die. I loved my life and I hadn’t wanted to die so young, but at least I could have died with the sweet memory of Lia’s supple lips on mine. I shrunk into my seat and remained motionless.

“There has been a disturbance and the hunting party is going out tonight to ‘secure peace’ in a small town not too far away.” He finished his thought as my heart thudded ravenously in my chest. What? A hunting party? Sweet relief! Contentment washed over me in waves as I realized this had not been about Lia and I. Thank you! There was a God and he was merciful today.

“We’ll be gone all night and most of tomorrow so I’ll need you to keep an eye on Lianna for me.” He announced pleasantly. He seemed happy with my skills and the level of devotion I had toward his daughter’s well being. I would have given my life for her and I was certain he was aware of that fact, if not the reason behind it.

“No problem. I will do all that I can. You know that I would never let any harm come to her.” I reassured him with a genuine smile yet deadly serious look. I would have sooner died than to have let one hair on her gorgeous be harmed.
