Chapter 9: My Two Dads
Lianna POV
After what seemed like hours of a full on sprint, I arrived at my grandfather Stefan’s house. It had only really taken a few minutes, but I felt oddly tired and overwhelmed. Being at my mother’s childhood home left me emotionally raw. But I knew the only one I could have turned to was my gramps.
I knocked on the door and let myself in after a few moments. I found gramps in the living room, nestled into his favorite chair by the fireplace, engrossed in an old book.
“Hey gramps.” I greeted him warmly as I put on a brave face for his benefit.
“Lianna my dear, how great to see you. What brings you here?” He questioned with eyebrows raised. I hadn’t often visited unless there was strife at home. Somehow he knew this, although I would never have admitted it.
“I wanted to see you.” I hugged him warmly, taking in all that he was and all that I had missed about him. I felt his love, but also his concern. Sometimes my gift was a curse.
“Well, this is a surprise. You couldn’t have waited until your party tomorrow? Not that I’m complaining, any chance I get to spend with my only grandchild is welcomed.” He announced thoughtfully. A nagging worry poked at me from all sides, as well as from within.
“I had a fight with my dad and Uncle Ronan.” I explained, a frown sat heavy on my face.
“I see. Care to talk about it?” He commented and led me to the cozy kitchen. I sat myself at the round oak table while he made us tea. Chamomile, it was soothing and I desperately needed comfort in this moment, since my ‘comforter’ had betrayed me.
“It’s about my mom.” I announced hesitantly. He sat my cup in front of me and rested in the chair beside me. He silently awaited my confession.
“I don’t know if you know this but… my mother, she loved both my father and my uncle.” The words had a hard time escaping my lips. I looked down in shame, felt as though tears of shame could have escaped at any moment. For some reason, I felt that it resonated within me. For what reason, I had no idea.
“I suspected as much.” His response surprised me. Was I the only one who hadn’t known anything about this?
“Did you know about this too?” I inquired as annoyance leapt off my tongue.
“She came to me once, much like you are doing now. She was confused in her feelings so I gave her some fatherly advice.” He simply stated and smiled in response.
“Gramps, it’s more involved than that. She wasn’t just in love with them both…” I admitted. I wasn’t certain I could have said the words that I needed to have said. The pain was fresh and it hurt like hell.
“Go on dear. I’m here for you, as I was for your mother.” Stefan announced calmly. He had a majestic, stately quality in his tone. I felt I could have trusted him, told him anything.
“Well she…” I hesitated, searched for the correct terms that conveyed my situation.
“They’re both my dad. I have two dads.” I blurted. A stunned face appeared before me. I felt that his shock had worn off after a few moments then turned to something else. Something I hadn’t figured out. It seemed like regret and the familiarity of betrayal.
