Dedicated to Weyyemah
Zubaida had finished loosing the last braid of her shuku, when Mariya walked into the house with a salaam.
"Zubaida!" She gasped.
Zubaida wanted to shout at her and tell her to leave the house but decided to hear what she came with first. Before she could answer her, Mariya had already dragged her to her room.
"What is it? You know the way you shouted if inna had heard you, you will have a lot of explanations to do right?"
"Just sit down first, let's talk." Mariya slumped onto the chesterfield while Zubaida sat on the well made bed.
"Are you still suspecting Sule?" She asked
Zubaida eyed her thoroughly and replied "oh, you're here to defend him right?"
"No Zubaida. He told me who the person is, wallahi its not him."
Zubaida eyed Mariya and hissed so loud and sharp; sharp enough to cut a fabric material.
"Is it Mariya or what do you call yourself, I'm not in the mood for any useless talk."
"Pregnancy hormones." Mariya giggled.
"Zubaida, its Magaji. The district head's son." She paused and watched as Zubaida kept staring at her without even blinking her eyes, like she was lost in thoughts.
"Sule told me he was stalking on you that night and wanted to tell you he had changed for good, but was unable to. So, when he saw you walking out of the house, he followed you without you noticing..."
Zubaida stood up and kept nodding her head still staring at Mariya, she gestured her to continue.
"When you passed the brothel, Magaji overtook him, and the lane was a narrow lane making it impossible for him to overtake Magaji." Mariya looked at Zubaida whose attention was now on the dressing mirror.
"Zaki wanke kanki ne?" She asked seeing her eyes were on the two big bottled petals shampoo and conditioner.
"Yes, but continue."
"He told me that he quickly hid when he saw him brought out something from his pocket and ambushed you with it.
He remained there for about twenty minutes before he decided to see what he was doing, that's how Magaji noticed him and shouted Sule. Which I guess is why you think it's Sule."
"Yes." Zubaida sighed.
"Zubaida, do you trust me?"
Zubaida sighed and nodded without looking at her best friend.
"Then, don't believe that Sule did that, I could sense the sincerity in his voice. And guess what?"
Mariya waited for a reply from Zubaida, upon hearing none; she continued.
"He said, he still loves you and is ready to marry you if you will give him a chance. He asked me to tell you that, he will wait for you to finish your school, but only if you're interested in him-"
"What if I'm not?"
"Then, he will let you be." Sighed Mariya.
"Mariri..."
Mariya smiled hearing Zubaida called her Mariri, it means they are now on good sides.
"Whether this had happened or not, I don't like Sule and I don't think I will ever like him."
