"OLI." RIVER'S VOICE CAME through the phone late that night, hoarse and full of sadness. "Riv," Panic seized Oli's chest. "What's up?" "It's Nate." River gasped, and as soon as Oli switched the button to turn the call to facetime, she could see the tears staining her best friend's face. "He- We broke up." Oli's heart shattered as River cried over the phone and she tried her best to soothe the girl from so many miles away. "What happened?" "He, he couldn't do it." The older girl sobbed. "It wasn't working for him. He- he didn't care enough to try." "River, baby." Oli soothed, feeling tears prick her own eyes. "I'm so, so sorry. He isn't worth it, Rivs." "But I love him, Oli. I do." River's eued closed as her voice shook with each word, and Olympia wished more than anything that she could be by her best friend's side to hold her in her arms. "I love you, River, so much." She said. "And I know you're going to be okay. Whatever it takes."
"IT WASN'T SUPPOSED TO BE like this." River breathed, tears tracing patterns down her cheeks. "He was supposed to be my happy-ever-after." Oli let one tear fall down her own face before pulling back her strong expression. River needed her. "Happy-ever-afters are overrated." She nodded. "But Ben and Jerry's and Lizzo are not." "I need you." River sobbed, her hands clutching at her phone as though she could reach Oli through the thousands of miles that separated them. "I'm right here." Olympia spoke softly. "I'm always right here."
