Since days, Abigail didn't bother Jane, just giving some glares at her without saying anything. The brown head didn't understand what was the goal of this girl, if she wanted to humiliate her or if she was just bored at this moment. Constance thought it was because she was always alone while Jane made friends the first days, contrary to Abigail who still didn't have any, or maybe she was trying to have all the attention on herself. Jane thought it was sad, so she decided to talk to her. She sat in front of her for lunch time, her khaki backpack in her left hand and her food in her right hand, smiling warmly to her, while Constance was not far, in case things went wrong. Abigail frowned.
- "What do you want!?"
- "My sister told me you was mean because you are always alone," stated Jane.
- "I'm not mean," answered Abigail.
- "Yes, you are. But, it's fine, I understand, it's not funny to be alone, that's why I wanted a dog."
- "Very interesting."
Jane didn't like the tone she used, her dog was one of the best things that happened to her, and she didn't want her to denigrate him.
- "What's the problem?" asked Jane.
- "I'm just wondering why I should listen to your stupidities."
- "That's why you humiliated me? Because I say stupid things?"
- "No, because you were acting stupid."
- "I was acting stupid?" frowned Jane.
- "You were in denial, and that's stupid."
- "I didn't know I was..."
- "Yeah, that's the point, I had been in denial for years, asking my mom if my father was back home because I was in denial, and everybody called me stupid for this. You won some time like that."
- "Uh...thanks, I guess."
- "No, Jane!" intervened Constance. "Don't thank someone who humiliated you! She had no rights to do that the way she did that! If she wanted to help you, she would have never done that! She is not your friend!"
- "But she is hurt and alone..."
- "And!? You were hurt many times in your life, but you never decided to humiliate people because of this, that's why you're smarter than her."
- "Yeah, ok, I know..."
- "Good, (grabs Abigail's shoulder and forces her to look at her) and you, if you don't stay away from her, I'll be your next problem, is it clear!?" told sharply Constance.
Abigail quickly nodded, not wanting to have problems with her. She took her stuff and went away from them.
- "I'm sure she just need friends," stated Jane with a disappointed tone.
- "It doesn't mean you have to be hers."
- "But no one else want to, if I don't try, they won't be her friend. I'm sure she is a good person."
- "She put you in a bin."
- "You did it too."
- "Um, yeah, but I'm your sister, and it's you who wanted to go in that bin!"
- "True," smiled Jane.
Constance playfully shook her head and rolled her eyes, which made chuckle Jane.
- "You won't give up, will you?"
- "I'm gonna draw her something."
- "Marshmallows?"
- "I don't know, I think I finished my period of marshmallows," pouted Jane.
- "Oh, really? I'm curious to see what's your next period is," smiled Constance. "Go with your friends now."
- "Yeah, ok, see you!"
The brown head stood from her table and went to her sister to hug her before kissing her cheek and walking away. She joined her friends at their table.
- "Hey Jane, what were you doing with Abigail?" asked Mike.
- "I was trying to be friend with her," explained Jane with a smile.
- "Oh, why?" frowned Dustin.
- "Because she don't have friends, and if she is my friend, she will stop put me in bins."
- "It strangely makes sense," stated Lucas.
- "Don't waste your time with her, if she doesn't have friends it's for a reason," told Max.
- "Maybe she is like that because she don't have friends."
- "But if she is like that because she doesn't have friends, she will never have friends."
- "Maybe she don't know how to make friends."
- "Even the stupidest person knows that bullying people is not the good way to make friends."
- "Some people just need some help."
- "Some people don't deserve help."
- "Why not? You think she is mean, maybe she is, but she won't stop be mean if no one help her to not be mean, so why not help her?"
- "Because it's Abigail! She never helped anyone so why would we!?"
- "What? I'm sorry, I think it's not a very smart way to see things, if everyone always wait for the other to be the first one to help, no one will help anyone. I didn't help you when you helped me when I arrived."
- "Your cute face helped me."
- "Um, ok, but if I hadn't a cute face, I'm sure you would have helped me anyway," told Jane.
- "Certainly, because you didn't spend your days bullying everyone because you were alone," answered Max.
- "She bullied you?"
- "She tried, but I didn't let her to. But she bullied your four other friends, so imagine how they feel about you trying to be friends with someone who hurt them."
- "I, I'm sorry, I didn't want to upset you..."
- "It's ok," intervened Will. "She stopped when Max arrived, it's past now."
Jane nodded with a sad expression.
- "Are you mad at me?" asked the brown head with a small voice.
- "No," sighed Max. "I just don't want you to be hurt by her, I don't think she deserves someone like you."
- "I'm not good enough..."
- "No, you're too good for her, she wouldn't understand how lucky she is to have you as a friend."
Jane's smile grew, while the girl wasn't daring to look at Max' eyes, feeling a bit embarrassed by the compliment, thinking it was too much, but coming from Max it wasn't the same, she liked when her best friend was telling her nice things like that.
The four boys frowned at each other, not sure of what just happened.
- "Did they have an argument or not?" asked Dustin.
- "It was the softest argument I've never seen!" stated Mike.
The three other boys all nodded. The group of friends all stood to leave the cafeteria. Max wrapped her arm around Jane's shoulders and kissed her cheek. She didn't want Jane to think she was mad at her for this, her friends were the most important persons in her life, like her real family, and keeping a safe relation with them was all that mattered, she had enough problem with her fake family, she didn't need to lose her real one.
