Vera's POV

"What happened to you? Who beat you?" my mother asks immediately I enter the car

"I hit my face on the door" I lie

I wish I could say the truth
But it'll make matters worse

"Are you sure Vera??" she asks worried
"Yes mum"

"Did you go to the sick bay?"

"yes, she gave me some medications"

She's give me a pity look and starts the car

I'm hungry

We finally got home

But with an unfortunate surprise, my Dad's family were in front of our house

My eye spotted someone
My younger brother
He's taller and he's still twelve years
He's taller than me

My mother and I got down from the car looking shocked

Johnny just stared at us without joy
He doesn't recognize us

"You start packing your things as from today"
That voice
That croaked voice
My dad's elder brother

"Why so!" my mother asks

"We've come here to take my brother's property away from you" he replys

"Are we taking Johnny along?" I ask

"He can't live with you unfortunate beings, you'll ruin his life"

I was broken

My brother looked at us again
He doesn't seem to care
He doesn't seem to care about us

"Please let us stay here.. I have no other place to go"  my mother begs

It's just pointless, they won't listen

"you must be drunk or something! Get inside that house take your things now!" he yells at us mercilessly

I tap my mother on her shoulder, indicating her to listen to him

At least we have a car

My mother has money so we'll find a place to stay

We walk past them, I look at my brother again and smile at him, but he rolls his eyes

We've been driving in circles since!
I look at the time on my phone, it's seven thirty
When will this torment stop

I glance at my mother, but she doesn't seem to pay attention to the road

Like I was in a dream, I heard a loud sound
My mother crashed in a tree
Airbags came kissed both our faces

I look at my mother

Her forehead's bleeding

"Mum are you okay?" I ask

She doesn't respond

I'm scared suddenly

"Mum?!!" I yell

Touching her body, I raised her head from the airbag

She's dead

My mother is dead

"Mummmmm!!!!!"

"No!"
"don't go"

I get out from the car
Yelling, crying, I wish I died so I'd be free
Free from this world

Luckily a neighbor from that estate came around

"help meee!!, she's dead"

My mother's dead
She's dead
I want to be dead

The old woman who came to help me calm down

"it's okay" she says
She's definitely out of her mind
The only person that loved me is dead..

How will I survive
I have no money
I know nobody

"will you stay with me?" the old woman asks

I don't respond, I just nod

"who'll take her body?" I ask painfully

"Don't worry, I'll take care of that, just pack your things

Like she commanded, I followed

" don't bother looking at the body" she says from behind

Unconsciously, I do
I stare at it for a moment
My whole world makes no sense without her

Two months later....

"you're starting exams when again?" Mrs Jones asks for the hundredth time

She's too old, her memory span is way to short
But she's kind and warm
Like a real mother... Her husband died ten years ago leaving her and her three daughters behind

But they're all grown up
The first, Kelly's 32 and working in France as a Surgeon
The second, Funmmi, she's 28 just got married a few months back
The last, Doyin, she's 24 still in Harvard University

And damn! She sure is rich
More rich than I expected
Her five king sized bedroom says it all

It's a fresh start for me
A good one..

"how's the school anyways" she asks busting my bubble of thoughts

Shit. I forgot about that hell hole. The devil's own kingdom
After that incident with Ayo-the black idiot, a lot of people have distanced themselves from me.. I guess they were scared of me now..
I wonder why.. Maybe because I was smiling when I was meant to be crying..

Well, we'll never know

"School's fine." I say coldly

"Are you sure?? Each time you return from school, you're always in a bad mood.. Hope it's okay?" she asks feeling for me

I don't want her to feel this way for me. Because she'll probably end up dead or the universe will think I'm enjoying her company too much then take her away from me
Like they did to Mother and Johnny

"it's fine" I respond

"Oh well.. Do you need to eat anything?" she asks

"I eat some chips a while ago, I'm good, thanks" I say

"Anytime dear! And Vera, you can't tell me everything but you can tell me anything" she says finally

"Sure" I say smiling
She smiles back.. Just like that of my mother's

Snap out of it!
No one's going to be there for you Vera, they'll break you.

Don't blame me! It was way too sudden to kill her mother
But it's for a purpose...
