The group enter the dark hallway, the torch as their only source of light. The buzzing feeling in Madi's head kept getting stronger and stronger and Echo hid herself more into the elf girl's hair. Ian takes notice of this and asks her "are you doing alright?" "Yes, I'm fine, just getting that feeling again" she tells him. "So, how often does that feeling occur?" Barley asks the elf girl. "Not often, it only happens when we're close to danger" she explains. "Don't worry, I'm sure there's not any danger" Ian tells her. "He's right, Mads, there's nothing to worry. The Gem is just on the other side, but watch out for some boobytraps" Barley tells the younger teens. "This place is a thousand years old, there's no way-" the elf boy said. As he said that, Wilden walks around a bit, his foot pressing onto a stone, which slowly emerged into the ground and triggering something. Then, a big axe comes in swinging in, slicing the top half of Wilden completely off, also causing the flame on the torch to go out. This made the other four scream and yelp.
Then, they all heard noises coming from above them. "Oh no" both Ian and Madi whispered. "Um, Mads, is that feeling you have still going?" Barley asks her. "No, it just stopped" she replied. With that being said, they hear what sounded like doors opening from above. Echo yelps at the noise as the three teens look up to see something green slowly slid down from the doors. "No way" Barley said, his eyes widening. Ian brings Madi close to him, wrapping his arm around her protectively. "It can't be" the older teen said. Then, the green thing plops down onto the ground, revealing itself to the group. "It's a gelatinous cube!!" Barley shouted. The cube starts to move towards them, taking the top half of Wilden, and making it disintegrate while doing so. Madi's eyes widen as she saw this. Then, they hear what sounded like a door closing behind them. They turned around and see just that. "Run!" the older teen said. "Wait, this looks like a puzzle, we need to figure it out before-" the elf girl said, but was interrupted by the older brother. "There's no time" he said to her. Barley and Ian each grab a shield to protect themselves. Madi feels the elf boy's hold on her tighten while Echo moves to the teen girl's arms, burying herself within them.
The brothers and Madi then pick Wilden up by the belt and the teens ran through the hallway, so many arrows and axes hitting them as they did so. They ran until they came up to a pit that's full of spikes. Ian looks at Barley and said "Barley, jump" "What!?" both him and Madi said. "Trust me" said the younger teen boy. The older teen did what his younger brother asked, with some hesitation, while the elf girl looks at her friend/crush, wondering what he is doing. He makes a running start and makes the jump, causing Madi to gasp. Just before Barley touched the spikes, Ian casts the levitation spell on him. "Woah, cool" the older brother laughed. Madi lets out a small breath, relief shown on her face. "Okay, Madi, I want you to take Dad and get across" the elf boy tells her. "What?! Ian-" the girl said, looking at him with wide eyes. "I'll be right behind you, now hurry" he said. Madi was unsure, but she takes the leash from his hand, places Echo on her shoulders, and runs onto Barley's back and to the other side of the pit. Ian follows right behind her, pulling his brother out from the pit as he made it to the other side, just before the cube can touch him. This causes them to be flung back, landing in the room with a thud. Madi sees that Wilden didn't make it to the room, so she quickly pulls onto the leash as the door was just a couple feet from the ground. The Lightfoot brothers and Echo help her and they bring the bottom half of the brother's father back in, just at the very last second before the doors closed completely.
The three teens sighed in relief, happy that they had escaped. Echo panted as she plopped onto the ground, tiredly. Ian helps Madi up from the ground, looking her over to make sure she's alright while Barley was helping Wilden up on his feet. "Well, that was exciting" she said to him, a small smile on her face. The elf boy returns the smile and said "yea, terrifyingly exciting". The girl chuckles as they start to move forward a bit, but was stopped by Barley. "Woah, wait you guys" he said, pointing down at a tile with a strange symbol on it. Echo gets up and sniffs at it, curious as to what it is. Then, they hear some rumbling noises and water starts to appear and flood the room. "I didn't touch it!" the older brother exclaimed. The baby dragon yelped when the water touched her and she jumps onto Ian's shoulders to get away from it. Barley puts his father on his shoulders while Madi looks up at the ceiling, which could be an exit. "Ian, up there!" she said to him. The elf boy looks up at it and he casts Arcane Lightning, but the spark didn't reach far enough. By that point, the water it's now up to their necks, to the point where they were swimming. Echo freaks out more and climbs onto Ian's head, clinging for dear life. "Hey, take it easy, Echo" he tells her, trying to calm her down. Madi looks back up and sees the symbol on the stone above, very much simular to the one on the tile below. She takes a breath and dives her head down, to see if it was true. Her eyes slightly widen when she sees the very same symbol on the tile. The elf girl lifts her head back up, a soft breath of air escaping her lips. "The tile down there has the same shape as the opening. I think we were suppose to step on it" she explains to the brothers.
"I got it" Barley tells them, handing Wilden over to Ian, while Echo moves to Madi. "Barley, wait" the younger brother calls out, but the older one was already underwater. He steps onto the tile and the younger teens look up to see the ceiling door start to open. "It's working!" Ian said. "Yes!" Madi cheered. The door opens only half way when it suddenly closes back up. Barley swims back up to the surface, gasping for air. "It's impossible. No one can hold their breath that long" he said to them. When he said that, all three teen's eyes widen, as an idea pops in their heads. Ian removes Wilden off his shoulders and him and his brother push him down into the water, guiding him to the tile. Madi watches while Echo freaks out more as the water rises higher. Then, the teens and baby dragon take a deep breath of air as the water fully surrounds the room. The elf girl holds onto the little dragon with one arm while helping the brothers with the other.
It took a few moments, but the Lightfoot brothers and Madi manage to get Wilden onto the tile, the ceiling door above them opening once again. Barley pulls Ian up first, with Madi and Echo coming up next. They all made a big gasp of air after being underwater for so long. They get up on the ledge and Barley pulls Wilden out from the water. Echo, who was in Madi's arms, moves a bit and shakes the water off of her body, and then cuddles close to the elf girl, shivering and shaking. Madi gently pets the baby dragon's head, calming her down. She looks at Ian and they look at Barley, and they all let out a laugh. "We made it" the elf girl said. When she said that, the older brother brings Wilden out from the water and he shakes the water off. This made the teens chuckle and Echo shake her head and growl, as the water got on her face. They get up on their feet, but Madi loses her footing a bit and lands into Ian's arms. He catches her and they look into each other's eyes. A blush appearing on her face, the girl clears her throat as she said "sorry, uh, about that" "It's okay" he tells her, blushing as well. "Alright, you two, the Phoenix Gem is just beyond this door" Barley said, gesturing to the ladder that led up to the entrance. "Shall we?" he asks them. "We certainly shall" the elf boy replied, moving up to the ladder. Madi places Echo on her shoulders, telling her to hang on, and starts climbing up behind the teen boy, with Barley and Wilden following behind her. "Dad, we have followed our quest, and it has led us to victory!" she heard him say to his father, which causes her to smile and chuckle a bit. Ian opens the door, only to reveal....
Okay, I'm not a big fan of cliffhangers, but gosh darn it, I did another one. Argh, what is wrong with me! Anywho, we're only a few chapters away for this book to be finished.
