Abby

It's been a week. I trapped myself in Caleb's guest room. I used this time to think what I was going to do. School started in a month, however I wasn't planning on going back to LA. I sent an application to the university of Chicago. I had an interview with them last year. I was waiting to hear back from them.

I was re planning my life. I was going to get away from everyone.

A week went by and I received a letter from the university of Chicago. I got accepted. Thankfully I had high scores on my SATs and I had good grades. I knew there was a good medical school there so I could apply there after I finished my university.

I told Caleb I was leaving. I didn't tell him where I was heading off to. He could accidentally tell everyone and everything would be ruined. I called UCLA for my transcripts and they said they could mail them to me. Then I grabbed my bags and headed to the airport.

I said my goodbyes to Caleb and promised I would keep in touch.

I had rented an Airbnb in Chicago, as I looked for a place to stay. I just need a room. Nothing fancy.

One day I was in the grocery store and I helped this lady with her groceries. She was so thankful. She invited me over for some tea.

We got to know each other and she found out I was looking for a place to stay. Her name was Irene Collins. She offered me a room in her house. Apparently she was a widow and she lived alone. I accepted her offer. She didn't want to charge me rent, but I insisted on it. She just wanted someone to keep her company. She was such a sweet lady. She looked like she was in her late 50s.

Once I settled into Irene's home, it was time to look for a job. Thankfully her home was close to the university and there were many places I could apply to that were nearby.

After a few days of searching, I found a job at a local cafe, since I had experience working in one, I was immediately hired.

I made an appointment with a hematologist here in town. I had to follow up on my treatment. Also I wasn't feeling very well these past few days. I wanted to make sure everything was ok.

I went into the doctors office. He seemed very kind. He took a look at my records and requested I had some new lab work done and then I had to make another appointment.

I went in the following week. The docto said the lab work looked great. I was recovering very well. "If I'm doing so well, why do I feel so tired? I keep throwing up in the mornings too." I told him.

"I was getting to that part Ms. Avery. I also requested a pregnancy test and your results came back positive. I'm going to be honest, I'm surprised you didn't have an abortion, with the surgery you went thru and the medications you're taking, I'm very surprised." He said.

I was in shock. I was pregnant? What, but how? How is this even possible. Well I did stop taking birth control and Chase and I never really used protection but after all I went thru. How is it possible? When I was diagnosed the doctor said the chances of me ever getting pregnant were very slim. Now I find out I'm pregnant. "How far along am I? I asked him.

"I can't be sure I would say approximately 7 -8 weeks based on your last period but I couldn't be too sure. You do have to see a gynecologist. Also, you do have to consider that you might need an abortion. With your meds"

"No that's not on option doctor, just give medication that's safe for the baby. I don't care if I don't receive the correct treatment. All I care about is my baby." I told him.

"Very well Ms. Avery, I switch your medication." He said.

I left the doctors office in shock. I got to Irenes home and told her the news. She seemed so excited. She never had children so she was super excited for me.

I scheduled an appointment with the gynecologist immediately. Thankfully she had room in her agenda.

She said the baby looked fine so far, but it was too soon to tell. I told her my medical history and what medication I was drinking. She says it's a good thing I changed my meds and she agreed with the other doctor, it was a miracle I still had the baby. She gave me some prenatal vitamins and gave me an appointment a month from now.

I started school the following week as well as my job at the coffee shop. Everything was settling into place.

Time went by so fast. The semester had ended and it was January, my due date was coming up. I asked the school for online classes this semester so I would fall behind and thankfully they agreed.

One night I woke up with severe pain. Irene took me to the hospital and with that Alexander Mathews Avery was born a healthy baby boy.
