After that incident with the pokemon poacher, our heroes arrives at Rustboro City in the night, going inside the pokemon center.
"Well guys, tomorrow, we'll go to the gym tomorrow. Afterwards, I have to go to Devon Corp." Ash explains.
May looks confused and asks "Why do you wanna go there?"
Ash nods, forgetting to mention an important detail of an explanation.
"Well, I occasionally dabble in inventing and I wanted to show him two of my proudest inventions." He says, Max was excited.
Max always loved dabbling in devices and was a fan of Devon Corp. He then asks "What're the inventions?"
Ash smiled and shows him the Poke-Link Box he made and demonstrated in Kanto's Cinnabar Island and the device to change a pokemon's ability, even it's hidden ability, to which he calls the Ability Changer.
Max was clearly excited to see it in action.
"Don't worry, tomorrow, Mr Stone, the president of Devon Corp, will be more than happy to volunteer to show how they work." Ash explains.
In the morning, Ash and the others head to Devon Corp, Ash approaches a man with white spiked hair and a blue suit.
"Mr. Joseph Stone." He said, Mr. Stone turning to him with a big smile and shaking the boy's hand while saying
"Ah, Ash Ketchum, an honor to finally meet you! Professors Oak and Birch told me a lot about you."
Max was clearly excited, Brock seemed similarly excited, but not by Mr Stone, instead, his secretary at the front desk. A fair skinned woman with chocolate brown hair in a low ponytail, piercing blue eyes, and was wearing a blue skirt that reached her knees, a green vest with a white tie, and a rose shaped charm on a necklace around her neck.
"Well, I'm sorry to have to say this, but the presentations have to be postponed for tomorrow." Mr. Stone said.
"What? Why?" Ash and Max asked in unison.
"Well, you see, my nephew is sick and his mother won't be back until tomorrow and everyone else is swamped. At first it was just schedules, but my nephew Ryan then got the flu." Mr Stone explained, clearly genuine.
"It's okay, it's just another day. I can live with that." Ash replied, not understanding that the others being busy with other things, mainly because he didnt know the things, but he did understand that things need to be rescheduled from time to time.
After all, tomorrow wasn't a bad day at all. It does mean that he can go to his gym match now instead of after the meet and greets.
He did feel a bit nervous about being in a room full of strangers, but he is now acquainted to Mr Stone in person. It wouldn't hurt for one more day of prepping his nerves.
"Aw man..I really wanted a tour too.." Max said. Ash smiled and pats him on the shoulder.
"Don't worry Max. You can watch my gym match if you want." He said, Max smiling at that.
"Max, May, did you ever watch your dad's gym battles?" Brock asked, to which they shake their heads.
"Dad didn't want any distractions to preoccupy him or his challengers. This'll be our first time!"
They head outside to see a sad Poliwag.
May's eyes lit up."Aww! A Poliwag! It's so cute!" She then scans it.
[Poliwag, the Tadpole Pokemon.
Its newly grown legs prevent it from running. It appears to prefer swimming than trying to stand.]
The gang heads out to the gym, which was luckily close by Devon Corp, to which they see two Nosepass.
"Uhhh, what are they?" May asks, to which Max answers "Those are Nosepass May."
A goal with brown hair, brown eyes, and a pink and gray dress with black knee high socks approaches the two Nosepass and sees the group and the Poliwag.
"Oh Poliwag! There you are, I've been looking all over for you." She said, going over to Max and the Poliwag.
Brock had heart eyes, but Ash was holding him back via ear pulling, sighing.
"Brock, the girl clearly doesn't need that."
May said, rather annoyed at Brock's flirty antics.
The mentioned girl thanks them and then introduces herself as Roxanne, a teacher at the pokemon trainer school and the Rustboro gym leader.
"Perfect, I'm-" Ash was interrupted by Roxanne acting in a rather fangirly manner.
"You're THE Ash Ketchum! I have been waiting for you! I was looking forward to seeing your inventions at Devon Corp, but they said they had to cancel the meeting." She said, eyes sparkling.
Ash was rather flattered, yet embarrassed by this attention, but recovers and then says
"I was wondering if I could have a gym battle with you."
Roxanne nods and pets one of the Nosepasses.
"Alright, that wont be an issue." She agreed, the Nosepass that wasn't petted looked fascinated by Ash.
In the battlefield, Roxanne looked ready. "How about a six on six Ash?!"
Ash nodded, Roxxane brought out a Geodude and Ash brought out Treecko.
"Ash made a great choice in choosing Treecko! It's a rock and ground type, so grass type moves will do lots of damage!" Max said excitedly.
Brock nodded, saying "Ash usually makes interesting or smart decisions. This decision is certainly the latter."
Treecko dodged many Rock Throws, knocking out the Geodude with Bullet Seed.
Roxanne brings out an Aron, to which Ash brings out his Torchic.
May scanned Aron, showing it's a steel and rock type, saying "Torchic has an advantage since Aron is a steel type!"
Max sighed and replied "That advantage is cancelled out by Aron's rock typing. So much for a good choice."
Brock chuckled and said "Don't understand him and his pokemon. I'd know. Besides, Torchic can learn fighting type moves, which is super effective against both steel and rock types."
Aron went to use Take Down, but Torchic intercepted with Low Kick and finished with Flamethrower.
The pokemon were withdrawn and Roxanne brings out an Anorith while Ash brought out Mudkip.
"Use Fury Cutter back to back!" Roxanne ordered. Anorith obeys, but Mudkip dodged them well, one shotting it with Water Gun.
Next was Lileep vs Togetic, a one shot Steel Wing was enough to knock out Lileep.
Then Onix vs Eevee, Eevee and Onix exchanges Iron Tails, while Onix had more bulk, Eevee was more nimble,
Eevee then finishes with Trump Card.
Finally, it was Nosepass vs Pikachu, Nosepass made many Double Teams, but Pikachu summoned a Rain Dance and Surf, but Nosepass's Sturdy helped it hold on, but a quick Volt Tackle was enough to win.
Roxanne healed her pokemon and went to Ash. "I'm impressed. You earned these." She then hands Ash the Stone Badge, along with a TM for Rock Tomb and a TR for Stealth Rock.
The Nosepass that was spectating grew fond of Ash, nuzzling him.
"Oh my, I think Nosepass wants to go with you." Roxanne said, Ash clearly shocked, but accepted after Nosepass begged. Ash pets his new friend and scans him.
[Nosepass, the Compass Pokemon.
Its body emits a powerful magnetism. It feeds on prey that is pulled in by the force. Its magnetism is stronger in cold seasons.
This Nosepass is level 25 with the ability Sand Force, Male, and knows the moves Harden, Thunder Wave, Spark, Power Gem, Rock Slide, Stealth Rock*Egg Move*, Double-Edge*Egg Move*, and Magnitude*Egg Move*]
Ash and his friends celebrated Ash's victory at the pokemon center, Ash preparing on the new day tomorrow.
