"This will hurt a bit," the doctor said as he started to dress my left arm.
I watched as blood welled up on my burnt skin.
"The scar will start to fade after about six months," he said. "And the fact that you're bleeding is a good sign. It shows that the skin underneath the burn is still alive."
I nodded slowly and looked at the black and red wound. The burnt skin around it resembled a lick of fire. The blood was seeping through the dressing already. It started to burn.
When I tried to sleep, the pain from the burn brought back suppressed memories from my childhood.
In the dream I was running, hot and sweaty under the midday sun. I was dizzy and thirsty. My whole body was hot and prickling. I hadn't been a strong boy growing up. I was sickly.
And my father didn't like that at all. So, he made me run every morning, regardless of whether it was boiling hot or raining.
In the dream I remembered thinking that dying would have been better than this.
