After a delicious three course meal, it was time for the first Waltz. Couples paired up with each other across the Great Hall and began the dance. Everybody was beautifully synchronized as music filled the room, engulfing the masses in elegance.
Oakley and William had been experienced in such dances due to the classy parties both of their families often threw. The pair looked professionally trained as they moved across the hall. Oakley, however, would occasionally get somewhat distracted which was very unlike her. She would catch a glimpse of a certain tall Hufflepuff gliding about with his beautiful date, and while Oakley knew of Beatrice's secret relationship, she still felt pangs of jealously at the sight.
"What's up with you?" William whispered as they continued to dance. "You keep spacing out. Pay attention, will you?"
"Sorry," Oakley whispered back, determined to focus on the footwork.
After a song or two, the music calmed down and turned into a much more relaxed slow dance. Oakley noticed Carter and Lily were both standing against the wall, not talking and awkwardly staring at their feet. Carter glanced up for a moment when he felt Oakley's eyes on him. She gave him a look that was saying 'ask her to dance or you'll regret it'. He knew this would be his only chance to dance with her, so he took a deep breath before turning to the blonde.
"Hey, Lily?" he asked nervously.
"Yeah, Henderson?" she responded with a look of innocence gleaming in her eyes.
"I was wondering if-" just then he was cut off.
"Hey- sorry Henderson...uh Lil can we...talk somewhere?" the voice of Adrian Pucey made Carter's blood boil.
"Oh," Lily looked caught off guard. "Yes. I would love to. Carter, we can talk later, cool?"
"Yeah," he answered. "Cool."
Carter gave her a fake smile while the girl of his dreams walked away hand in hand with Adrian Pucey. He felt his heart hit the floor as he dragged himself in the opposite direction and plopped down permanently at a table.
Hours passed as Oakley and William danced excitedly with their classmates. Everybody was jumping around, feeling the beat of the music and enjoying themselves...for the most part. Oakley was mostly thinking about her upcoming meeting with Cedric, but she tried to have a good time with her friends nonetheless. In need of a drink, she left the dance floor and started to walk towards the table she had dinner at.
"Now, what's a handsome bloke like you doing here all alone?" Oakley teased Carter, sitting down in the seat next to him. "Hey, where's Lily?"
"You should ask Adrian," he stated with a sigh. "They left together a few hours ago,"
"Are you serious?" she asked with a slightly appalled and extremely apologetic look across her face.
Carter just nodded before looking down at his feet.
"I don't know why I thought she might want to dance with me," he said. "She obviously just sees me as a friend. I was going to do it, too. If she had said yes to dancing with me I was going to tell her how I felt. I just can't keep doing this shit, it's bloody painful spending everyday with her, but not being able to be with her,"
"I know what you mean," Oakley sighed earning a confused look from Carter.
"What do you mean 'I know what you mean'? You're with the person you love," as the words escaped Carter's mouth, Oakley just couldn't hold back.
"No," she sighed, her eyes locked on the Golden Boy as he danced with his friends. "No, I'm really not."
Carter's head whipped towards her as she spoke, a shocked expression covering his face. He saw her bright eyes and followed her gaze. He then made the heavy realization.
