February 1923

Mary walked through the doors of Downton, carrying bags of goodies for the children. She walked into the sitting room, and placed the content on the floor. Her 2 year old son, George, spotted her first.

"Mama!" He cried, pulling himslef up onto his toddler legs. He scrambled over to her to give her a huge hug.

Sybbie looked up, her ears catching this new word. She stood, her dress crumpling, and toddled over to her aunt. Sybbie's crystal blue eyes sparkled at Mary. She pulled on her dress, babbling.

"Mama, mama, mama." She mumbled.

Everyone went quiet. Tom's cheeks went red.

"Mama." She said again, holding her arms out to her.

Tom scooped up Sybbie before Mary could, and pulled out a crumpled picture from his coat pocket.

"That's not your mother darling," He said softly, "This is."

Sybbie took the photograph from Tom and studied it for a while. She pressed her chubby index finger onto Sybil's face and said very intelligently,

"Mama."
