Narrator's pov

-

"Hi Autumn" his voice was more deeper than usual with a rapsy tone to it, for once his breath didn't smell like the high scent of whiskey

His hands were shoved deep into the pockets of his freshly pressed black pants, something he wore everyday to work yet appeared with the same attire to his own daughter's party

His beard was even shaved low, his knuckles grazed against them for a small scratch before shoving his hands back in his pockets. Nervous he was. It was written all over his face and those ocean blue eyes, his posture was always his way to describe his feelings, something Autumn would have said if he even spent one minute of his day with her

Autumn felt the wind knock out of her lungs with just one glance at her father, her brows pushed together as that confused state started to rise

Questions were hidden under the layer of shock that was reaching to Autumn's brain

"Wh-What are you doing here?" Autumn's voice came in a much more softer tone than she expected

It wasn't easy to see her father standing there in front her. Hell, it wasn't easy seeing someone who's presence you craved your whole life

"I.. Um.. Kate" He said, motioning with his hands towards the brunette
"She.. Um.. She invited me"

Silence fell onto the group that stood by the rails, Autumn's brows were still stitched together as she turned to face her girlfriend, even more confused than she already was

"Wha-"

"Just hear him out" Kate whispered before placing a hand on the girl's shoulder

Autumn hasn't said a word, the poor girl was still confused but she trusted Kate enough to know she had a reason for whatever she had done

"I... I guess this is my cue" The man whispered

"And I'm gonna leave" Lisa chuckled

"Take me with you" Kate snickered before walking forward to join Lisa

But a warm hand caught her own, keeping her in her tracks. Autumn's glossy eyes stared into brown ones, scared of her to leave when she was already unaware of what was going on

"It's okay, if you want me to stay then I will. But he just wants to talk to you and please hear him out. You can make whatever decisions you want but just listen, please. Trust me on this" Kate whispered as she stepped closer towards the girl

Her fingers cupped Autumn's cheek as she tip toed even in her heels to place a tender kiss on the girl's forehead

Autumn's fingers held Kate's waist firmly, a tender grasp that told a story only the two of them could read. Kate smiled, knowing it was Autumn's way of showing she was scared of what was to come next but ready to take a step either way

Kate's lips still stayed on the girl's head, feeling Autumn's thumb stroke her flat stomach and holding her closer to her chest

"Stay close" she whispered into the brunette's ear

"I'll be right here if you need me"

"It's okay, you can go. I just.. Just stay close"

"I will baby" Kate whispered, placing another tender kiss on the girl's cheek before Autumn's hands slowly slipped from her waist

Autumn watched as the girl faded away behind from the edge of the boat and around a corner which blocked off any view of her

Her eyes then drifted towards the tall man that stood in front of her. His black hair was slicked back with a wavy comb over. He always managed to stay neat, especially when it came to something important

Her fingers toyed with his golden buttons of his tight black suit that hugged his body like spandex, highlighting his broad shoulders and muscular body type

"I..um.. Do you want to sit?" he asked

"no" the raven hair girl said bluntly

"Oh.. Um.. Cool" He mumbled

That awkward silent fell between them once again but then again it was bound to happen. How can two people who share the same blood interact when they've never been around each other before? There's bound to be awkward tension and pointless coughs or clearing their throats

"Ha-Happy Birthday" He whispered

"Thanks, it's the first one you've ever appeared at since you weren't even there on the day I was born" Autumn said in low voice with a hint of sass in there

"I... I deserve that" He mumbled

"Damn right you do" Autumn grumbled to herself

Her hands gripped around the cold silver edge of the balcony rails as she leaned her body over. Those blue eyes focused on the crashing together of the waves and the bottom of the boat, watching at the frizzle leave and come back with a force

"Your mother couldn't be here tonight..."

"Oh don't worry, I wasn't expecting either of you to show up" Autumn mumbled again

Her father gritted his teeth together and nodded before mirroring her pose, his eyes looking out over the horizon that was dimly lit by the full moon that cascaded above them

"I don't really know where to start from" he chuckled nervously

"Start from why the fuck you gave up on me?" Autumn hissed

"I never gave up on yo-"

"Really? Because you sure have a loving way of showing you care" the girl spat again

Autumn's father nodded slowly before his fingers gripped the edge of the balcony even tighter, taking in a deep breath

"I know you don't want any long stories so I guess I'll just say it right now. I'm sorry.. Autum"

"For what?" She asked

"For everything you can imagine"

"Oh I have a really interesting imagination so you've gotta be more specific" She scoffed

"Your um... Your girlfriend, after that night we left she got in contact with us a few days later and scheduled a fake business meeting. I was busy at the time but I never miss a business opportunity so your mother and I flew out to meet her. After a few minutes, we realized it was never about business... She.. She was forward and pushy but.. She made sense. She talked all night about you, non stop and she made sure not to leave any stone unturned. Your mother.. Being the hot head that she is didn't hesitate to throw a fit. But for some reason, I couldn't find it in myself to get up and walk away from that girl. Something felt... Heavy inside me. Something that just tugged at my heart and wouldn't stop squeezing until I was nothing more than a such of bones and a disappointment" The man said

His eyes glanced over towards Autumn in search for some kind of reaction, but the girl held her head low looking out to the crashing waves beneath them

"I should have tried" He mumbled

It was only then did he earn a small glance from his daughter. Perhaps because she was stunned or perhaps because she was disgusted but no one would know that answer for sure, besides the girl

"I should have tried harder"
