February 13th: still
At six o'clock, when the twins, Veronica and Zola, don't call, Megan and I decide we should go home to see if there's trouble.
We drive back to her house, the city lights rolling by as we ride along.
"This was nice of you." Megan tells me, breaking the silence.
"Letting you pay? That's hardly on my 'Top Acts of Kindness' list." I answer.
"No, silly. Letting Ezrynn spend the day with Camden."
"Well that was your doing. You planned the whole thing."
"Yes, I know, but I could tell you were hesitant on letting him stay with your baby sister; you're very protective."

"No, grumpy pants! It's a good thing, but sometimes..." She sighs. "Sometimes Ezrynn will need to...take care of things on her own, you know?"
"Ezrynn's took care of things for ten years! She needs nothing of the sort, she's gone through what someone her age should never have gone through!" My foot presses harder on the gas. "I intend to protect her from anything like that that ever may happen, to prevent it from ever happening again. And letting who knows who fool with her is something I will not let happen."
"Corbin, calm down, you will not be able to protect her if we're both dead..." Megan squeezes my knee. I can hear the strain in her voice, she's scared. "Corbin, pull over. Pull over! Corbin, pull--!"
