Much of Clara's childhood was spent wistfully though not properly. She could imagine their reactions—Mother would have fainted, Father would give her a loathsome lecture, if they knew their 'precious' daughter had disrespected royal protocol. As one did doing all the taboos of young princesses: trading dancing for fencing, dresses for armor, teacups for wine. In Clara's mind, it was a trade of freedom for a cage, but her parents never understood.

Looking at it now, Clara could only remark that it was Fate herself preparing a story that lay ahead for the Margrita princess. But at the time, it had been, all of it, a curiosity natural to any child at her age. She used to pout at her brothers who trained with the knights, their sword glittering like stars. Oh, how she wished to joy them and discard her horrid lessons. It took months before she did. In secret.

Clara thought she knew strife, but almost by comparison, those days filled with longing were far kinder. Because what lay ahead was much, much darker.
