Clara cradled the ring around her hand. It was an indigo blue, dark, unlike her eyes that sparkled like sapphires. Her eyes welled with tears staring at her engagement ring. Her love for Nicol. He—their love for each other. It only been two months, not even half of what was agreed within their engagement, and she knew that she had loved him as a lie, but would love him as a truth as well.

Never in her life would she imagine, much more live through, a love that was returned. Her entire life was filled with stories of her role. She was a princess. Her hand was expected to extend to whoever held the higher benefits of joining the Margrita bloodline, a decision that she could never quite envision—but surely she did try to. To be the sort of child that would wed for power when it was expected of her.

And now she had that, but love as well.
