Vagary
- An unpredictable instance, a wandering journey; a whimsical, wild or unusual idea, action

✦✦✦✦

October passed in much the same way as September had; studying, classes, detention and quidditch. All of Lynnea's friends had become used to the layers of bandages on her hands, and no one else really thought of it as strange any longer.

It was quite unfortunate that the cuts appeared on her right hand, the skin had become hard and rough which meant doing wandwork or simply using a spoon was much more difficult than it should be.

The hard and rough skin was because of the healing paste that Owen had made, it worked better than any of the ones she could come up with herself, and it meant she did not have to visit Madam Pomfrey when the cuts became too deep.

The paste was painkilling too and made sure that her hand stayed numb. She had gotten her mom and Alex to send her a bucket full of hand lotion in an attempt to help the skin heal but even the muggle remedies did not seem to help. Her mom didn't know the use of it of course, Lynnea had said it was because of quidditch.

"Can I now ask why we haven't been practising Occlumency for the past weeks?" Lynnea asked when Snape had decided they were done with her Legilimency for the time being.

"I spoke with Professor Dumbledore," Snape said instead of answering her question.

"And?" She asked when he did not continue.

"You put up a veil of information instead of clearing your mind. It was peculiar and hard to penetrate, but we agreed you should still try and clear your mind instead," Snape finally answered.

"Easy enough for you to say," Lynnea muttered under her breath, causing Snape to send her a sharp glare but it seemed he had not fully heard what she said.

"Pushing information into someone's face won't be enough to stop someone from searching your mind," He snarled again.

"We shall begin Occlumency again," Snape said while sitting down on a chair in front of his own desk and gesturing for her to sit down on it. Without any words being passed between them she sat down and he raised his wand, pointing it straight at her.

"Legilimency." And suddenly she was back in her own memories while furiously trying to push Snape out of them.

"Another unsuccessful attempt, Miss Ilves?" Snape asked her with a curled lip when yet another beetle fell lifeless onto its back. Lynnea had advanced greatly throughout the weeks but her potions still never truly worked.

The green lightning-like spell had curled around the beetle for 5 minutes before breaking through the barrier the potion created and killing it.

"It's lasting longer."

"Yes well, you need a stronger memory," Snape scoffed behind her.

Overall he had been helpful but he always found a way to still get little jabs in and make fun of her or say something discouraging. By now she had luckily learned to not take it to heart but it was still god damned annoying.

"I have to find another way to make it work as well. I can't go around soaking people in a potion," Lynnea sighed while exhaustedly placing both of her hands on the table with the steaming cauldron on and gazing into the liquid.

"I'm sure you will work out a way to do so. Now that will be all for tonight," Snape said while gliding back behind his desk.

Lynnea looked at the grandfather clock on the wall, sure enough, it was already midnight. She waved her wand, cleaning up her potion and floating the ingredients back to their assigned drawers.
