Decoded

As each day passed, another letter arrived. Although, each one was significantly different. Codes in front of my face that I couldn't make out on my own. It was time I called up an expert to help me.

Knock! Knock!

There they are!

I rushed to the front door from the living room. A heavy set of knocks came from the other side. I opened the door to none other than the ultimate detective themself, Xena. They smiled at me cheerfully. I let them in as their hair bounced behind them. What was once red underneath their black hair had been bleached to a shiny silver.

Xena was now known for being the "best dressed" out of all of us. Today, they dressed in brown cuffed jeans, a white long-sleeved shirt, a black cardigan, and a pair of platform boots. Not to mention, all of their jewlery and makeup. Can't judge, they look great 24/7!

"Thank you for coming on such short notice." I began. "I know you're very busy with your jobs."

"It's not a problem." They said setting their mug down on the glass coffee table. "The earth won't study themself and tarot cards won't read themselves."

"Making money I see?" I cooed bringing a bowl of fresh fruit for us to snack on.

"Yeah, writing is going slow. Traveling is fun though, I love my job."

"What did you say you worked as?" I sat down across from them. They fiddled with their rings, clinking them against their ceramic mug.

"I'm a forester primarily." They said picking up one of the letters. "But it's a good thing you called me! Because I have writing technique and know how to think like an author, I'm your best bet to decoding this."

"Well good! Mark and Amy have been acting weird every time I show them the letters. They tend to just act like they are regular fan admiration letters. I think there's more to it."

Xena took the three letters and laid them out, shuffling them around in order. They took out a notepad to write some stuff down.

"Okay. This one with the number signature was the first one your received, right?" Xena asked me holding up the first letter. I nodded in reply.

"The second one doesn't have a signature but the last line is what you think to be a jumble of letters."

"Yes." I pointed to the last letter. "And this one had letters mixed up, but it doesn't look to be in the same format as the second letter."

"Well. The first one is written in code. If you take the numbers and line it up with how the alphabet goes numerically, it spells out a word." Xena showed me a small diagram of each letter of the alphabet having a number next to it going from 1 to 26.

"E. T. H. A. N- no fucking way." I cut myself off sitting back into the couch stunned.

"Yeah. Looks like he is putting a good amount of effort to win you back." Xena said picking up the second letter. I remained quiet.

I couldn't process it. Ethan? After everything he had done. I know I was the one who departed from him, but I had no choice. With everyone's pressure suggesting I should take time to myself, I knew I had to.

"The second letter reads out 'I ma os yrev yrros rof eht mrah ev'i enod. Uoy evresde retteb. I lliw eb retteb rof uoy.'"

"That all sounds like gibberish to me." I finally said. "If anything, it could be Latin or some other language."

"Could be, yes, but that's not what it is." Xena said writing down the translation on a paper slip.

"Then what can it be?"
