Twenty Two

"John dear, I'll be right there" She ran outside to help him.

"I feel strange" David spoke first.

"Me too" Efe replied.

"There's this feeling in the air... It is suffocating" Efe held out the neck of her peach turtle neck sweater.

"I feel it too. It is uncomfortable" David agreed. He used his hands to fan himself "Compose yourself mom's husband is coming in" he said when he heard footsteps.

"Shhh-shut up" Efe replied through her fake toothy smile as they waited. The footsteps got closer as the air got tighter for the siblings. They were too occupied with gasping for air that they didn't notice a pair of footsteps fade away. The German front door swung open for Chioma and two large bags of foodstuff.

"Hey where's your husband?" Flustered Efe failed to compose herself unlike David, who sat as if he wasn't just being suffocated.

"He's going back to work, he has some errands to run for his boss... Are you okay?" Choima asked

"I'm good.. Just feeling a little dizzy and tired" Efe smiled.

"You should get some sleep. We'll be here for a while" David fiddled with a small red pillow.

"I guess so" Efe spread out on the large red sofa. As her head hit the pillow she was fast asleep. David watched her with calm wide eyes.

"David come and help me put these things in the fridge" His mom called.

"Are you like Efe too?" Chioma talked as she sliced up onions.

"You mean, do I have powers?" He put a bottle of water in the fridge.

"Yes, do you? You never showed any sign of that when you were little" she smiled to herself.

"Well I do have powers, I can control things with my mind. I can't control people sha, maybe i will one day, I've not reached my limit yet." Bottles and packs of meat flew into the fridge and freezer, Chioma couldn't see this though, because she had her back facing him while she chopped green peas.

"Hmm... That sounds interesting"

"Do you want to see?"

"If you want to show me. I'm not pressuring you to do so if you don't want to" she stopped chopping and ranted.

He laughed at her "Turn around, I've been using it since I came in here" Chioma spun around shocked to see things floating around and into their respective places. Her jaw dropped at the sight. David sat on the counter watching her expressions. She heard the knives behind her chopping on their own, she spun again mesmerized by this. She didn't know how long she stood there but she only moved long after everything was diced and chopped to perfection.

"Ma?... Mommy are you okay?" David hopped off the counter.

"God has blessed me. Trials, pain and sorrow came my way but God was with me through it all. God loves me that is why He made my children blessings" she cried in her palms.

"Mom if God loves you, why did He allow us to be taken in the first place? Why didn't He keep us with you? You would have never been sad and we would never have ended up as... Killers"

"Oh baby" she held his face in her hands "There's a reason for everything, God is precise and intentional. Instead of dwelling on the bad things that happened in your life, why not focus on the good?"
