Chapter 1 (III): Who?

Katsumi stood there, not moving a muscle while showers of screams rang out behind her. She was completely paralyzed with fear, but on the outside, her expression was blank.

Obviously, this was the first time she had ever encountered a dead body so suddenly like this. That blood was most definitely real, without a shadow of a doubt. Now that she could see it, she could now pick up its raw, metallic scent.

Just then, Monokuma popped up. "Good gracious... Things quickly took a turn for the worse. My, my, now this is interesting!" He grinned avidly. "On this tropical paradise known as Jabberwock Island, the very first murder has finally taken place!"

"H-Hold on!" Nagito said. "Then, does this mean...?!"

"Upupu... Of course... Togami-kun... was killed by one of you. If you look at the body, you can tell instantly. He was obviously murdered. That face of despair, being killed to fulfill someone else's selfish desires... If this isn't murder, then what the heck could it be? Togami-kun was most likely sacrificed... by someone who reaaaaaally wanted to leave the island."

"L-Lies..." Hajime uttered. "It's all lies! You're lying that he was murdered!" Though once Hajime said that, he clutched his chest with wide eyes. He must have already accepted it to some extent.

The doors behind them were practically kicked open and in ran Peko and Chiaki. "Wh-What... is this?!" Peko exclaimed. "I-Is that... really Togami?"

"Why...why did this happen?" Chiaki said. "Why... Togami-kun?"

"I see, I see..." Monokuma said, turning his head around the room. "It appears Kuzuryu-kun is the only one who isn't here... Sooo, in the spirit of keeping everyone on the same page, how about we do this the usual way?"

He disappeared. Right after, the monitor speaker sounded.

*Ding Dong Bing Bong*

The screen lit up with Monokuma. "A body has been discovered! Now then, after a certain amount of time has passed, the class trial will begin!"

Once the monitor turned off, Monokuma showed up once again. "I've already explained this to you, right? If one of you gets murdered, the rest of you have to debate who you think is the blackened. From this point on, you guys must investigate and uncover the blackened culprit!"

Of course, everyone was objecting to that idea.

"It can't be..." Mahiru said. "Someone actually killed... There's no way!"

"I won't believe it..." Nagito said. "One of us killed Togami-kun... There's no way... something as hopeless as that would ever happen!"

Monokuma's red eye glinted. "If you're actually thinking that way, it means you guys are already being conned by the killer. C'mon, c'mon! Let's hurry up and begin! An impassioned, life-risking battle between you guys and the blackened! Annnnd... it's already started the moment one of you plotted to kill someone!"

"H-Hey!" Monomi appeared suddenly. "What are you saying?! Everyone! Please! You cannot, you should not believe what Monokuma says!"

"No matter how much you interfere... there is only ever one truth. On my grandfather's name!"
