爱 fanfic : y/n x toman : ♡ • ›🐿: it was already close to christmas, right now it was the twenty third of december. you had started to live in your apartment more, in fact you hadn't slept over at emma's since the evening you spent with mikey. but still, you never skipped out on visiting shinichiro or kei's grave with mikey.
you were invited, to spend your christmas with the sano family, you had hesitated to accept the offer considering christmas is about family. but then again, it's not like you really had any, anymore. but over emma's peer pressure to accept the offer you had done so. you were finishing up your christmas shopping today. buying presents for those you felt obliged to.
hm?
shuji?
it didn't take much for him to notice you staring at him. he always did have a keen eye, but it's not like you were in the mood to see him. but then again, were you ever since kei's death and his fight with mikey in september. you had completely ghosted the boy for almost three months now. he was probably upset about it but yet, he greeted you with a smile.
"good afternoon y/n, christmas shopping?" the boy spoke.
he wasn't as giddy, or loose. he was formal, as though you were merely acquaintances. but then again, you had been treating him like a complete stranger.
you nodded slightly, avoiding eye contact. it hurt a lot.
what happened shuji? first you involve yourself with a gang that condemned and threw a blind eye to rape, and sexual assault? and then the one that killed kei?
he wasn't the same boy you knew so well.
"i never got to give you your birthday present." he went on quietly rubbing the back of his neck with a smile.
you weren't really interesting in whatever it was. it wouldn't change the fact that your brother wasn't here anymore because of the gang shuji was part of. or the fact that a family is traumatized over a previous gang he associated himself with. it was utterly disgusting.
he took out a box from his pocket, as though he had expected to see you. he gently opened the box in front of you.
oh.
this hurts.
it was a necklace, identical to the bracelet your brother had given you for your birthday, the same brand, the same embroidered writing on it. it all hurt too much. you were just getting over it. and then, and there did it all hit you again like it just happened.
. . .
why do you manage to hurt me more and more unintentionally shuji? it just wasn't fair not at all.
"it matches. it matches the one keisuke gave me for my birthday." the words fell out, and in that moment did any emotion inside of you seem to fade. you were expressionless, empty, drained.
shuji hanma fell silent.
and so did you.
"sorry.." the only word he could muster up from the situation. he realized there and then, did he manage to ruin the progress you had made. the progress of recovering mentally. and just before christmas too.
and the two of you left it at that.
the box shoved into your pocket, and the images of october thirty first replaying in your head, constantly.
─────
sitting there, on a park bench, in the cold. just you, and your collected thoughts.
"you're going to catch a cold if you're not careful." a voice spoke from behind you gently placing his diamond patterned jacket over your shoulders.
"i don't recommend putting your hands through the sleeves because, well you already know its short sleeved." he groaned with a small yawn, placing your shopping bags on the floor, slouching into the seat next to you.
"thank you.." you mumbled quietly.
the thoughts, they all began to stop.
"any reason you're just sitting on a park bench staring at the water in the middle of december?" he asked plainly.
draken, was a straight to the point kind of guy, it honestly made you wonder why emma-chan liked him so much, because despite that he was oblivious to her feelings. but i mean hes a guy, so hes gotta be dense either way.
"just thinking about stuff." you muttered staring at the ground.
"what stuff?" he replied.
. . .
"keisuke's death." the words left a bitterly cold taste in the air. you doubted that he was prepared for that one.
but to your surprise, he patted your head with a smile. "cmon baji wouldn't like to see his younger sister sulking at such a fun time of year now would he?" his expression was cheery.
it was unexpected, refreshing actually. you were expecting something plain like, "oh." "i'm sorry" "don't be sad".
you realized it, the reason emma-chan liked him now. he wasn't someone who would mope around. but you had never really known that, considering you hadn't ever seen him upset or talking about upsetting topics, but of course he must deal with that in his own ways like anyone else.
"you'd make a perfect husband for emma-chan." you said with a small smile, handing back the boys sleeveless jacket and bidding him fair well.
walking home, with lifted spirits you felt it, on your nose. the first time it had snowed this december. it really was mesmerizing to witness.
"kei, would definitely enjoy the cold weather." you said with a smile. ★
