It was early evening and the Commanders' meeting had long been over.

I was in the kitchen, lighting the fire in the stove, getting ready to prepare Erwin's dinner. I had picked berries with Erwin the day before, so I decided to make him an berry pie.

While the pie was baking in the oven, I heard the swinging doors open. I turned to see Connie, who still had the somber look on his face.

"Hey there, you" I said in a whispered tone "you okay?"

Connie walked closer to me, his eyes on the ground

"Connie?" I reached out and touched his shoulder "what's going on?"

He looked up at me and the expression on his face made my heart sink. Tears welled in his eyes, somber and full of emotion. The pure, raw look of distress and pain on Connie's face made me realize something terrible had happened.

"Our village" Connie finally spoke "those Titans... they came... from our village"

"What do you mean?" I asked, quite confused

"They somehow turned into titans" Connie's voice shook as he spoke "we don't know how but..."

I let out a deep breath of sorrow, feeling much more melancholy than before. Although I had never really interacted with people in our village, I still knew everyone. And to find out that they are now titans filled me with a sense of woe and dread.

Yet, I also began to question how. Did this mean that anyone could turn into titans? Was it random? Maybe this is why Hange wanted to perform experiments on me.

"My parents..." Connie's voice still shook and cracked as he spoke "they..."

"Became titans?" I finished his sentence

Connie looked away from me, his body beginning to tremble

"I'm sorry" I sighed, reaching over to him again, pulling him in for a hug, he accepting

I heard him begin to sniffle, as if he was crying. I didn't want to make a big fuss over it; I knew his pride could get in the way. Sometimes, all anyone ever needed was a hug.

I couldn't imagine how I would have felt if I got a hug that morning my family was taken from me.

"I understand-" I spoke softly, breaking our hug, handing Connie a rag from my apron pocket "-not fully, but I do know what it's like to lose the people you love"

"Yea, but at least they're not titans" Connie snapped

I knew he was feeling an array of emotions, anger obviously being one of them, so I tried my best not to snap back at him. Instead, I just pressed my lips together and smiled

"No, they're not" I sighed

I look down, may hands grasping onto my apron. My fists clenched the rough purple fabric as I recalled that day; just as I always did

"They're dead" I huffed "Murdered, more like it. By thugs..."

I took in another deep breath before I continued, trying so desperately to calm my nerves

"And titans. Those same titans from our village"

Connie looked back up to me, a look of confusion and regret on his face

"The love of my life was killed by the very people I grew up around" I said as tears began to gently fall down my cheeks "So we both lost something very precious to us"
