So I've kind of started a bit of a longer story. I didn't want to make a whole new book for it so I decided I would publish it here. It's a soulmate au where your soulmate's name appears on your arm on your sixteenth birthday, but there's a little bit more to it than that...
Disclaimer: JK Rowling owns all the characters and places and you own Y/n.
Enjoy ;)

Everyone knew that at on your sixteen birthday you found out who your soulmate was. Their name appeared as a tattoo on your wrist and, for muggles, that was where it ended. However, if you were a witch or wizard, the tattoos changed colour. When you got it, it was a normal black. When they realised they were in love with you, it turned gold.

Sirius Black was both surprised and unsurprised to find out who his soulmate was. It made sense, considering he had been staring at her e/c eyes and h/c hair for years. She was the only girl who he'd ever struggled to talk to. Whenever she even glanced at him his heartbeat sped up and his throat tightened. All of the confidence and swagger he usually carried around with him disappeared.

So, on his sixteenth birthday when her name appeared on his wrist in tiny black letters, his heart did a little backflip. He wasn't entirely sure if it was from excitement or nervousness.

"Can soulmates ever be bad for each other?" he asked Remus at breakfast that morning after swallowing a bite of sausage.

Remus thought for a moment, is eyes wandering down to the wrist Sirius had covered up with his leather jacket.

"I don't think so. That would defeat the purpose of a soulmate." He said finally.

James, who had been listening quietly for once, jerked his chin at Sirius's wrist, "Who'd you get?"

Sirius swallowed anxiously, his cheeks blooming red as he muttered soft enough so that only his two friends could hear, "Y/n L/n."

Remus's eyebrows flew into his hairline and James gave a little snort into his plate.

"Good luck there, mate. You've been ogling her for years." The latter teased.

Sirius glared at his friend, "I have not been ogling her. Just... admiring."

James smirked as he shrugged, "Same difference."

Sirius groaned in frustration and ran a hand through his hair. Remus gave him a bemused smile, "It seems the Fates have a sense of humour after all."

Sirius glanced at him wearily, "What's that supposed to mean?"

Remus shrugged, "Well, think about it. The one girl other than Lily who you've never been able to 'charm' is your soulmate. She also happens to be the only girl you've ever been interested in for more than a few months. You've been talking about her for years, Pads. She's like the Lily to your James and she's your soulmate."

Sirius glared at him, "Thank you, Moony, for pointing that out. It hadn't occurred to me at all."

Remus smirked, "It's just nice to see you being the flustered one for once."

James laughed at that before changing the subject.

"Speaking of Lily..."

———

Y/n was a little confused.

Her muggle studies professor had come to her at the beginning of the lesson and asked her to stay behind for a few minutes when it ended. She hadn't seemed angry or grave, so Y/n knew she wasn't in trouble, but she also didn't seem happy or proud. Not to mention, the girl couldn't remember anything happening to or because of her that could possibly warrant the professor wanting to speak with her.

Nevertheless, when the lesson ended and everyone else got up to leave, Y/n simply stayed where she was.

Well, almost everyone.

None other than Sirius Black was left in the classroom with her and the professor once the rest of the students filed out. Y/n resisted the urge to frown in confusion and simply plastered a polite but curious expression on her face.

You see, Y/n and Sirius weren't exactly two people who found themselves often in the same situation together. Where Sirius was outgoing and boisterous, Y/was more reserved and mature. She preferred to spend her weekends tucked up under a blanket with a good book while he enjoyed going up to Hogsmead with a different girl each week.

If she was being honest, she hadn't really given the boy much thought other than a little bit of disgust every time she caught sight of him snogging with some random girl in public or annoyance whenever she witnessed one of the notorious Marauder pranks.

Yet, here she was, being asked to stay back with him by the Muggle Studies professor.

"Now, Miss L/n, as I'm sure you know, you are my top student in this class. You have scored excellent marks on all your homework assignments and tests and your cooperation in the class is impeccable," the professor stated. With every word, Black seemed to shrink into his seat, the lack of self-confidence from his demeanour so shocking that Y/n found herself staring slightly out of the corner of her eye.

"Mister Black here, however," the professor continued, "Is struggling. I understand that the fact remains that you are muggleborn and he is pureblood and that is probably a huge contributing factor to the difference between your marks, but that doesn't mean you cannot help him."

Y/n started, her words sinking in, "Wait- Help him? You want me to tutor him?" She had barely spoken three words to this boy in the six years they had been attending Hogwarts and now she was expected to teach him?

The professor nodded.

Sirius suddenly got up and swung his bag over his shoulder, "With all due respect, Professor, as much as I'd love to continue being compared to L/n here, I really have to go to my next class."

Y/n frowned slightly, her eyes scanning the expression on his face. Hurt and bitterness filled his features, but within a blink it was gone. However, in that brief moment the emotions had been there, clear as daylight on his face. A thought so unexpected crossed Y/n's mid that she almost jumped from fright. Maybe Sirius Black hated being compared to others because that was all people ever did when it came to him. Maybe, due to this constant judgement and criticism, he didn't think very much of himself to begin with.

As Black walked out of the door Y/n stared after him, a strange feeling filling her chest. It was almost like... sympathy. She felt sorry for him. Sirius Orion Black, playboy and prankster. Yet perhaps all of that confidence and charm was a mask? Something to hide what he was really feeling.

The girl shook her head as she walked back to the Ravenclaw common room. It would take more than a small encounter like this to change her views on Black's ways. A lot more than that.

What did you think? Do you like it? Is it worth continuing?
