Q' wati
Paul had left, giving me a chance to read alone. I didn't know how long I had been by myself, but I had gone through all of Tyee's research.. twice.
I didn't tell anyone I was finished, merely deciding to absorb the information as I sat on the backyard deck. The pack was being their usually rambunctious selves inside. Billy, Sue, and the rest of the pack had arrived- even Cole was in there with Leah. The two were making an effort but they were far more reserved than they usually were.
Currently Billy was on the phone with Adrien and Sam; fortunately the duo were already on their way back. I don't know whether it was a coincidence that Tyee showed up now or he purposely beat Sam and Adrien here for dramatic flair.
Tyee's attitude had the pack's attention right now. No one was fond of his approach nor the fact that we were now in his debt but I needed answers, and I am both happy and fearful of the ones I received.
I played with my rings, twisting the metal band around my finger as I thought best on how to explain this to the pack, perhaps I could just have Billy read it to them.
The screen door slid open, "Well?" Paul questioned, Billy joining him.
I looked to Paul and back to the trees, "Truthfully, I'm still processing it." I gathered up the papers into a pile and slid them across the table to where Billy was sitting. "I think I'd be best if you read through this too."
Billy handled the papers, leafing through them while Paul peered over his shoulder. They both seemed unsure as they set the papers down and looked back at me.
"Aurora," Paul sat between Billy and I, "you can read Quileute?"
"No," I bluntly stated confused, "why?"
"All of Tyee's research... it's written in our language." Billy explained, showing me the papers but to me I couldn't tell the slightest difference.
"It looks like English," I said and handled the papers again, "Billy, can you read Quileute?"
He shook his head, "Not completely, there are only a few elders who can speak it. I'm not entirely sure if they can read or write it. Our language is almost extinct."
"But Tyee Fox is fluent in it?" I doubted.
"His father was one of our chief members," Billy explained, "He left the reservation in search of Tyee after he disappeared.. but he never came back. He was one of the last elders fluent in the language- it's possible he taught Tyee from a young age."
"This is crazy," I sighed and looked back towards the house where the pack was standing, "I know you can hear perfectly well from in there but would you like to sit outside?"
Jared slowly slid open the door, "Well if you insist."
The pack slowly began to filter amongst the deck.
I picked up the papers, skimming over them once more to keep myself on track while I recount the legend to my family.
"All of Tyee's research talks about a reincarnation of this deity. The possibility of this happening is once in a lifetime...not even, more like five lifetimes."
"What deity?" Billy asked.
"Q'wati," I answered, seeing him immediately recognizing the name.
"Q'wati," Embry questioned, "the Q'wati?"
I nodded.
Cole looked between the pack. "Who is that?"
"Essentially the creator of the Quileute tribe," I answered. Despite the fact that Cole and I had a rocky relationship, I felt so much more at ease that someone else is also newcomer to our legends. I continued on, "based on the legends, she formed the first humans of the tribe, transformed the wolves into people. She taught them how to hunt, take care of themselves- she was the start of everything."
