Wishing Some Things Didn't Happen

When Daryl left your room last night he didn't come back. This lead to you not being able to sleep very well. Mostly due to a part of you kicking yourself for telling him about what happened at the Sanctuary. Another part of you says it was the right thing to do but you wish you didn't have to do it the same day you got back. When you finally fell asleep last night you fell into a nightmare, nobody wanted anything to do with you because of what you did with Negan, especially Daryl.

The sun shines through your windows in the early morning and just like before the end of the world you wake up with it. You sit up in your bed, glance around your room, and freeze. Daryl is sleeping on your couch, his arms behind his head and his ankles crossed at the other end. You thought he didn't come back last night, but he must have come back into your room while you were asleep.

You tuck a piece of your hair behind your ear as you quietly turn your body on your bed to face him. You look over him to see that he's wearing the same clothes as last night, he didn't remove anything before he went to sleep either besides his shoes. You notice that his socks are so worn that there's a hole in the heel of one of them and a hole in the other with his big toe poking through. You also see the holes all over his pants that were clearly not a fashion choice and there are a few holes on his shirt as well. You guess almost two years in this world could do that to someone's clothes.

Not your clothes though. Sure the clothes you first showed up here with weren't in the best condition, but you have accumulated clothes over your time here as well. In total, you have five t-shirts, only one with a design on it which Negan gave you; while on the other hand you only have two pairs of jeans and one pair of shorts.

You stand from you bed, in just your t-shirt and underwear and quietly move closer to Daryl. You sit down on the coffee table, which lets out a little squeak as you put your weight on it. After you glare at the table for its noises, you look back over at Daryl.

The night in the barn starts to play back through your mind. You remember how peaceful he looked when he was asleep then, you also recall how he held you close through that cold night and how you woke up in his embrace.

"(Y/N)..." he mumbles.

Him saying your name pulls you out of your train of thought and makes your eyes focus on him once again. Everything within you is telling you to give him a kiss to wake him up, but you know deep down that that is not a good idea.

'He probably hates me.' You think to yourself. 'I know I would. Hell, I do.'

"(Y/N)?" You hear the questioning in Daryl's voice which makes you open your eyes and look at him. His blue eyes are open and are looking at you. He is slightly sitting up with his left hand reaching out to my face. "What're yah cryin' for?"

"Crying?" Your left-hand goes up to your face to find that it is wet with tears. 'When did this happen?'

"Talk to me." He wipes some of your tears from your face, then rubs your cheek with his rough thumb.

Your eyes water and you can actually feel these tears go down your face as you ask; "Do you hate me?"

"What?" Daryl's eyes are full of shock.

"Do you hate me?"

He quickly sits up and takes your hands into his. "Nah, I don' hate yah." He looks down at your hands for a second. "I may be pissed but I don' hate yah."

You sniffle and go to speak but before you do you hear one of the men at the gate yell, "Open the gate!" This makes both you and Daryl pear out your windows to see Rick and some of the others from Alexandria coming through the gate.

Without a second thought, the topic of hate and everything that you had done was seemingly forgotten as you hurriedly get dressed and Daryl throws on his boots to go down the stairs of Barrington House.

. . .

While Daryl goes to talk to the group, you stop just outside of the front door of Barrington House. You watch as Daryl is joined by Jesus and they talk to Rick and everyone only 10  feet away from you.

"If you want to join their conversation, I'm sure they would be grateful to have you."

You look to your left to find Maggie leaning on one of the posts just a few steps away from you. "They wouldn't trust me enough to tell me anything."

"When Daryl trusts you, it's given that Rick will grow to trust you as well." She fiddles with a baseball cap in her hands, "Just give him time."

"If they find out about Harlan they will never trust me." Maggie glances back at you with confusion. "It's like Enid said, I'm the reason they took him."

She puts the baseball cap on her head as she takes a few steps towards you. "In a world like this you do what you can to survive." Your eyes widen with surprise. "I'm not saying that what you did was right, but anyone can understand why you did what you did."

"Do you actually believe that?"

"I know that Jesus sees the reason for it." She places a hand in your shoulder as she says, "I heard about what you witnessed there and what happened between you and your brother. I'm sorry."

All you do is nod, then you watch as she walks towards the group.

'Her views would be different if she knew about Negan.' Your left hand starts to twist your right index finger. 'She would hate me for it, even if I tried to explain to her that I couldn't have controlled it.' You feel your left hand moving onto your next finger.  'Would she kill me if she knew?' It moves to the next finger. 'Could death be that simple?' Moves to your final finger. 'Could all I have to do be telling someone what happened with Negan and they'd kill me, just like that?'

"(Y/N)." Your blankly look up to see Daryl standing in front of you. You see his blue eyes full of worry as they look down at your fingers. "Why'd ya do that?" You follow his gaze and see that all of your fingers on your right hand are dislocated. You just blink as he gently takes your hand in his. "Here. Let me help."

You just watch as he twists each individual finger back into place with a pop. When he's done you platonically say, "I'm sorry."

"Don' be." He places one of his hands on your face and forces a smile. "At least ya didn' break any this time." You give a little smile. "Come on, we're gonna go to a place to get sum guns."

He holds your hand as he leads you to Rick and the others. Many of them seem confused by Daryl holding your hand, while Jesus and a few others smirk. Rick, however, crosses his arms and slightly glares at you.

"Are you sure we can trust her?"

"I trust her, Rick." His grip on your hand tightens a little. "And I ain't leavin' her here alone." He glances over at you then give Rick a stern look.

"Alright." Rick just nods, not wanting to argue with his best friend. "Let's go then."

You hear a few people in the group whisper as you all walk towards gate. But all you can focus on is that after everything Daryl is holding your hand in front of everyone.
