As promised, I was able to find Eric who was able to assist me in leaving the party early. Without all the attention being placed on my absence. The conversation with Jean keeps replaying through my mind as Eric borrows my vehicle to drop me back off at my home.
"Are you sure you'll be alright?" Eric asks a worried expression on my face as my car idles in the driveway. My own expression would match his own, I had my own concerns for a different topic.
"I'll be fine Eric." I retort, exiting the car. Having slight trouble with the weight that sat in my stomach. "Tell everyone I was tired."
Eric assures me it would be done.
That meant I could breathe a sigh of relief. Watching Eric drive away in my own car was a strange feeling, although I knew the time was ticking for the days I would be driving myself. Being pregnant means that you have to give up on some of your independence in the last days before my daughter is brought into the world.
I quickly undressed from the dress and threw on a simple t-shirt and black leggings before climbing into bed to relax. It had been a stressful afternoon, stress was something that wasn't healthy for my daughter.
I decided it was best to rest my eyes for a short while.
When my eyes opened once more, it was due to the constant ringing from my cellphone. Looking out my bedroom window I see the sun had disappeared and was replaced with a night sky.
Grabbing my phone I see an incoming call from Otis. Along with the three previously missed calls from minutes before. I answer quickly. "Ruby is everything alright? My mother said you left your own party early?" I could hear there was both worry in his voice and a tone of exhaustion from his long double shift.
"I was just feeling a little unwell," I explain. "Nothing a six-hour nap couldn't help."
There is a chuckle from the other end of the call. "Well, I suppose you'll have plenty of energy for our late night date." He suggests, with the statement of the date added, my cheeks couldn't help but flush red.
"As long as you're not going to fall asleep biking over here," I mention, getting up from my messy bed to find a sweater lying over the end of the chair.
"Who said I made it home, I'm outside your house now." He explains. Looking out my bedroom window I see the tall figure of Otis standing there waving in my direction. "I'll see you in a second."
Hanging up my phone I throw on my sweater and a pair of white sneakers that had seen better days before creeping down the hallway to gather my bag that contained my spare set of car keys. Grabbing the things I needed I exit the house, finding my car sitting in the spot that Eric assured it would be returned. "Otis?" I ask, looking around to see he had disappeared.
"Miss me?" The voice asks quietly, giving me a fright. Turning around I smack Otis' arm while let lets out a burst of laughter. "I got you something."
Otis pulls out a wrapped present. I inspect it, telling him he didn't need to get me anything. Although I'm assured it was no big deal as I open it to reveal a baby jumpsuit that said 'I take after my mummy!'. I found it pretty cute in a light pink colour. Also in the present was a voucher for the local spa.
"Not everything has to be for the baby." He explains, shrugging as I thank him.
From the kind gesture, I throw my arms around Otis, kissing his cheek in the process. "Thank you!" I hold on to him tight, the cheap cologne he wore reminded me of our short romance. The hinted danger we were fighting so we didn't get caught excited me. It ignited a passion I had buried inside me. This causes me to pull away.
My hormones needed to get themselves into check.
"So should we go?" Otis asks, scratching the back of his head.
"As long as you promise not to kill me. Otherwise, you'll be up for double homicide."I joke lightly, making Otis' face pale even more as I hand him my car keys. "Don't be afraid, you've survived my driving."
Otis breathes a sigh of relief before he gets into the driver's seat. He had gone from a cocky teenager bragging he could drive me and our daughter around to a scared boy all due to comment. "Let's go, I'm craving chocolate ice cream."
"Okay, okay," Otis says putting on his seatbelt and adjusting the seat back further before starting the car engine. "You're not going to make your parents worried about sneaking out?"
I shake my head. "They're blessed to have a grandchild coming, they knew she was created this way," I explain assuring him my parents had no issues. I had informed them I probably wouldn't be back in the morning due to the late shift Otis had. They were glad he was stepping up to be a father. "So how was work?"
Otis reverses out of my driveway and to the exit of Moordale, where we would be finding a twenty-four-hour store to have a trip for ice cream. "Boring and slow," Otis explains. "Although doing a double meant I got paid a lot of overtime. How was the party?"
I let out a sigh. "It was alright until your mother decided to threaten me," I state, my eyes focusing on Otis gripping the steering wheel tighter. "I'm sure she's just being over-protective over her little boy."
"Doesn't excuse it, I'll talk to her," Otis mutters, as we drive along the road.
