Throughout the dinner, Jaehyun's mum could sense that Chaeyoung was still keeping a distance from the Jung family. She also saw how Jaehyun was trying hard trying to make Chaeyoung comfortable, by getting food for her, glancing and smiling at her once in a while to ensure she is alright.
Indeed, the Jung family was warm, with the bubbly Yeri talking non stop, and Jaehyun making fun of his sister. However, Chaeyoung didn't feel like this belonged to her. As long as Jeongwoo is able to grow up in the Jung family, she would be contented. Afterall, he existed because her body condition did not allow for an abortion at that time and yet she could not provide the best for him. Right now, she just wished the best for her son.
After the dinner, Chaeyoung wanted to take her leave. After seeing that Jeongwoo was in good hands with the Jung family, she was more relieved to leave him with them.
"Can I send you home?" Jaehyun asked, one hand rubbing the nape of his neck as though he was nervous asking the question.
"What do you mean by 'can I send', Oppa, you must send my sister-in-law home," Yeri said in a cheeky manner, but her real intention was to help Jaehyun out of the nervous and awkward situation.
Jaehyun has always thought his little sister was noisy, but this time round, he was secretly thankful that she was noisy. Because with her words, Chaeyoung did not reject his offer to send her home at all.
During the car ride, they were silent. Jaehyun was nervous, he wanted to update Chaeyoung about something but did not know how to go about doing it. Finally, he mustered his courage to speak up, "I have ended things with Naeun"
"Hmm?"
"I am not sure if you know that I was previously dating Naeun, and that might have made you uncomfortable with our status now. But I have ended things with her. So, you don't have to feel uncomfortable if you are hanging out together with me now."
"Oh I see.. now I feel like a third party." The last part came out as a mutter from Chaeyoung, more like talking to herself.
"We didn't break up because of you. There were problems between us to start with. Our relationship was built on a lie and that was why we didn't work out."
Jaehyun explained in all seriousness and Chaeyoung listened carefully before nodding, "okay, if you say so..."
"So... don't have to keep a distance with me deliberately.."
Chaeyoung hummed and nodded. Deep inside her, she felt a little warm. How would Jaehyun know what she was thinking? She long knew that Jaehyun was in a relationship, which was why she kept a distance and chose to suffer alone with Jeongwoo until she could no longer support his health condition. The last thing she wanted was to break Jaehyun's relationship with Naeun. Even now, she kept a distance away because she didn't want anyone else, including Naeun, to get the wrong idea. Who knew, Jaehyun could read her mind and actions, and would take time to explain to her.
As for Jaehyun, why was he explaining? He didn't know too. All he knew was, he felt upset whenever Chaeyoung kept a distance from him. He wished to try giving Jeongwoo a complete family. "Yes, that must be the reason why I feel upset when Chaeyoung seemed distant, purely because of Jeongwoo." Jaehyun tried convincing himself. Or maybe, he was just lying to himself.
