The failed experiment (Bucky x reader)

A date overdue

After seeing Doctor Joy in the morning and having breakfast, Bucky promised to take you in the evening on a date but didn't want to tell you where he was taking you. He headed to the gym while you headed to the lab with Frost. You continued to work on your corset, then used the base design of the bulletproof fabric to start making an undershirt for the guys. Frost was ever vigilant on your desk, watching everything you did and barely moving. Tony grumbled a bit about the cat being in the room, but did it at the same time while scratching Leia behind the ears. Bruce tended to get into his own projects and ignored the fact that the animals were even in the room. You put in your headphones as you got into your work more, trying to focus more. You had Friday print out the schematic of the corset and undershirt, and grabbed the fabric that you had hypothesized would work well. You went to one of the lab tables and started cutting the fabric and putting it over the print out, trying to stick close to the original design. You had bonded vibranium dust to a silk fabric to try to make sure that it would be malleable, then started sewing it together. When you were done, you went to the ballistics lab and put the fabric up on a dummy to see if it would work. You went and grabbed a gun and started shooting at it.
You looked to the side and saw that Frost had joined you and was watching intently. You went and picked up the fabric and saw that the bullets were crushed in front of the dummy. The material seemed a bit heavy, which concerned you. You knew that meant going back to the drawing board. You inspected the dummy and saw that it would still cause significant bruising on a person, but at least it stopped the bullet from going through.
"Tony, I need more vibranium dust" you announced walking back into the lab.
"I'll ask Shuri if she wouldn't mind sending some more" he looked at you curiously. "Did it work?"
"It worked, but its too heavy" you admitted. "I'll try bonding it to another material. It also would cause significant bruising"
"Its not like its one of my suits, you mean" he grinned.
"I can do better" you decided. "Until the materials come in, I'll have to just hypothesize what would work best and make better designs" Frost meowed at you and you picked him up. He curled up on the shirt you had made in Bucky's size and watched you start typing into your computer again.
"You going to the gym today?" Bruce suddenly looked up from his work.
"No, I'm just bringing them down" you shook your head. "I'll go for a swim maybe" you admitted.
"You aren't, you just need to train different. Go to the gym, I know that the girls would love to see you" Tony seemed to be pushing you to go. You arched an eyebrow at him.
"They brought in one of those rubber dummies for you to practice on, so you can get a full workout in" Bruce finally admitted. "They are worried about you, that's all"
"I'll think about it" you shrugged. "Its almost lunch" you looked at the time. You picked up Frost and left the lab feeling a little irritated that your experiment was not what you wanted. You did have a lot of frustration to get out. Maybe some gym time would be good for you. You wouldn't have to worry about hurting anyone, so you could use your powers at the same time. You could go all out if you wanted to.
"Hey Sunshine" Happy saw you come into the dining room and take a scoop of meat out of your plate to feed to Frost and Alpine. Bucky came in shortly after and Alpine joined Frost at their dish. "Someone's quiet today" Happy mentioned.
"I'm frustrated" you admitted as you sat between Natasha and Bucky. "The material is too heavy"
"Is it bullet proof?" Nat raised an eyebrow.
"Yes, but would leave significant bruising" you nodded.
"Sounds like a success" she shrugged.
"Its not good enough yet" you grumbled and Bucky put his hand on your knee.
"Why not come to the gym, we have a surprise for you" Steve smiled, and Bruce cringed.
"I already told her about the dummy" Bruce admitted.
"I'm thinking about going to the gym, but I want to go all out since I don't have to worry about hurting anyone" you whispered.
"Can we put monitors on you, and maybe watch?" Tony perked up.
You thought about it for a few minutes, then nodded consent without saying it out loud.
"I'm interested to see you not holding back" Bucky grinned mischievously.
"Your supposed to be working out, and getting ready for the big fight" you reminded him.
"So are you, sexy legs" Sam reminded you, and you looked down at the table not saying anything in response.
