I woke up to Hange bursting in without notice. They ripped off the duvet that lightly covered my sleeping form. I curled together and groaned in frustration.
"Wakey wakey, sweets!" They yelled. I got up, clearly unamused. They threw me some clothes they had found in my suitcase, along with a lab coat. It was fully equipped with pens, erasers, pencils, medical light pens, and some sticky notes. They hurriedly ran out of the room after yelling for me to meet them in that all-white room. Professor Ackerman had on several occasions told me about Zoë's... behaviour. I wasn't annoyed or upset by this in particular, but it could get tedious. Though she had her serious moments, she was nice either way. Before I got into my coat after having changed, my phone started buzzing. It was Sana. I hadn't heard from her in quite a while, so this was a bit of a surprise.
"Hey, what's up?" I answered the phone. For a split second, I could've sworn I heard heavy breathing. I became alert, so I asked into it,
"Sana? Are you okay? What's going on?" I couldn't hear anything besides a low whisper. It wasn't clear enough, so I turned up the volume on my phone.
"Y/n, you should talk to Pieck. I don't know what happened. I'm so confused. She just... she... just talk to her, okay?" My heart started pounding. Was she in trouble? Did she do something to Sana? Does it have anything to do with the lab? Would Hange know anything about it? Would I even be able to ask them about somethinglike that?! I couldn't shake the uneasiness off. It felt like my heart was beating in my throat. It felt tighter than ever.
"Sana, what happened? Please tell me." I demanded, trying not to sound anxious. There was a long pause before I heard screaming. After that, the line was cut off. The scream sounded more like anger than fear. It may have been Pieck. I quickly ran out of my room to find Hange. Surely they would understand why I had to leave. Pieck was... everything to me. I was halfway there, when I bumped into a familiar person.
"What's the hurry?" I purse my lips before answering,
"Nothing, Eren. Mind your own business." I wasn't exactly thinking clearly when I said that. I had no reason to be hostile towards him. Especially when he had treated me to dinner yesterday.
"Um- sorry?" He responded, confused and in a daze. I walked past him, but I could hear his footsteps behind me. They were quite apparent. For now, all I needed was Pieck. I needed to talk to her. After Sana's unsettling phone call, there wasn't really much else on my mind.
"Y/n, what are you doing?" I ignored him, until we finally found Hange. They were standing in front of the door to the white room. They were checking a clipboard, but seemed deep in thought. Maybe interrupting them wouldn't be the brightest idea? I didn't care in that moment though. I greeted them, and in an instant, their head shot up.
"Y/n! I have new developments!" They said excitedly and started typing the code to the door. I found it harder and harder to ask if I could leave.
"You forgot to wear your coat. Please wear it next time. For now, you're good." They tilted their head a bit, their ponytail following the movements. I watched as their eyes squinted in suspicion. Perhaps, they had caught on.
"Spill it." Was all they said, before unlocking the door.
"Well... you see..." I started. I was a lot more nervous than usual.
"Well? Get to it!"
"I was wondering if I could go back. Just for a couple of days." I said in one breath.
"Y/n, but you just came?!" They put their hands to their hips, and once again, tilted their head.
"I know, it's just... something came up. I'm pretty sure it's quite serious." I lowered my head. They sighed and checked their clipboard again. Crossing off a few things, they gestured for me to leave. I bowed out of respect and thanked them. They responded by giving me a small smile. I had completely forgotten about Eren. He stood still, right behind me. I turned around and walked towards the door.
"I can drive you. I'm faster than a taxi." His tall figure stared down at me. I shrugged and responded by saying,
"Why not?" I went to my room, to grab a few things before leaving. We entered Eren's fancy car and he turned on the engine. I couldn't feel it at all. Rich people... I leaned my head against the window. It felt cold against my flushed cheek. Not that it was a bad thing. It was quite enjoyable.
"Is this about your little girlfriend?" I rolled my eyes at him and let out a small 'tch'. He chuckled, but began speeding up. I turned to face him. He gave me a somewhat concerned smile.
"You seemed in distress, when you spoke with Hange. Not to mention the fact that you told them it was serious." Eren's eyes were focused on the road, but it felt as if he was looking right at me. No- through me. It felt like he knew what I was feeling- what I was thinking.
"Pieck and I may not be on the best of terms, but I'm happy to help a friend out." He spoke. Eren usually seemed like a guy who would party through his life with no worries. He was usually assumed to be someone who didn't know how to take things seriously. His reputation wasn't exactly the greatest, despite his popularity. Even so, he was genuine when he said that. I could feel the comfort in his voice and his words.
"Thank you Eren. It actually means a lot to me." I stared down at my feet. My body was tense from the stress. I couldn't shake the feeling that Pieck had gotten in trouble, or that Pieck was hurt. Sana was my friend, but Pieck was more than just a friend. She was more than just a lover. I had grown to like her more than I thought I could ever love somebody. She made me feel special. Almost as if I was everything she had left.
"We're here." Eren said and pulled into the parking lot, in front of the dorms. I ran to the building where Pieck and I lived. Eren was quick to follow me inside. The elevator was as slow as always. I pressed the button to our floor. My heart was beating out of my chest. My ears were beginning to ring.
"Calm down. Deep breaths. I'm sure she's okay. If anything, Sana's probably the one who's hurt." His words were starting to slur together and all I could hear, was the sound of the screaming from the phone call. The doors finally opened and I ran out. In front of Pieck's dorm, I saw Sana. She was standing still, with two fingers pinching the bridge of her nose.
"Sana! Oh my gosh. Are you okay?" I asked. She nodded. She looked exhausted. Maybe from bickering with Pieck? Her finger pointed at the door, and I swallowed hard. I turned to look at Eren. He nodded, understanding that he was to keep Sana company. My heart was still pounding. I knocked once. No response. Twice. No response. After feeble attempts of being polite, I opened the door and saw pieck sitting on the floor. She was clenching her head with her hands. I walked closer to her and sat next to her.
"Pieck, are you okay? What happened, babe?" She didn't respond, but proceeded to cry instead. Hot tears were flowing down her soft cheeks. Even when crying, she was beautiful. I pulled her in for a tight hug, which she accepted gracefully.
