kyorin dreaded going to school for all the right reasons. she had spent the entire weekend wishing monday would never come, praying that time would stop altogether. but of course, here she was already on her way, dragging her feet like a prisoner marching toward execution.
her steps were slow, heavy with the weight of the red string tied around her pinky. no matter how many times she tried to ignore it, it was there tethering her to jay park like some cruel cosmic joke. her mind was a tangled mess of thoughts about him, chaerin, and this ridiculous fate nonsense.
just be normal, rin.
she inhaled sharply as she reached the school gates, forcing a neutral expression. if the universe really thought she would just accept jay park as her soulmate, it had another thing coming.
her eyes scanned the courtyard for yoojin and nari, expecting them to be waiting for her. but the usual sight of her friends lounging by the entrance was missing. she frowned. weird.
pulling out her phone, she checked for any messages. nothing.
"maybe they went in without me for once," she muttered, slipping her phone back into her pocket.
before she could turn toward the entrance, an arm slung over her shoulder.
she stiffened, instinctively snapping her head to the side only to come face to face with jake sim, grinning like he'd won the lottery.
kyorin blinked. "good morning to you, too?"
"hello, rin!" he chirped.
her eyes narrowed. nickname basis? she carefully shrugged his arm off, looking at him suspiciously. "what're you doing here? with me, specifically?"
"i usually hang out here in the mornings, and i saw you weren't with anyone. figured i'd keep you company."
his easygoing smile made it hard to be annoyed. kyorin sighed, adjusting the strap of her bag. "right. well, i was gonna check the cafeteria for yoojin and nari—"
"oh, no need!" jake interrupted, flashing a grin that looked a little too mischievous for her liking. "they're up on the rooftop."
kyorin hesitated. the rooftop? at this hour? before she could ask, jake suddenly grabbed her wrist and started dragging her toward the stairwell.
"wait what? why are they even. jake, slow down!" she protested, struggling to keep up as he bounded up the stairs like an overexcited golden retriever.
by the time they reached the rooftop door, kyorin was out of breath, her thighs burning from the climb. she barely had time to adjust her blazer before jake reached for the handle.
