the classroom was lively with the usual lunchtime chatter, desks pushed together as their group huddled over their meals. kyorin sat with her arms crossed, absentmindedly poking at her food, while jay scrolled through his phone, pretending to be more interested in it than he actually was.
tension still hung in the air between them, unspoken but heavy. ever since their argument, things had been awkward. they were trying to act normal, trying to play their roles like nothing had changed, but it had. jay hated how much it bothered him.
"okay, can we stop talking about that stupid test?" nari groaned, dropping her head onto the desk dramatically. "we're literally eating right now. i do not need to think about how i probably failed."
yoojin, who had been in the middle of comparing answers with sunghoon, scoffed. "you definitely failed."
kyorin snickered, leaning back in her chair. "yeah, i saw you fill in the bubble 'c' like five times in a row."
nari shot them both a glare. "it's called trusting my instincts."
"your instincts are wrong," yoojin deadpanned.
before nari could launch a full-fledged argument, she suddenly turned to kyorin with a grin, "anyways! forget the test. more importantly, your birthday's coming up! what are we doing for it?"
jay barely had time to register the question before kyorin stiffened beside him. her birthday? his head snapped up, but before he could react, jake let out a loud gasp.
"wait. what? your birthday's in november?"
kyorin blinked at him, confused. "uh... yeah?"
jake dramatically pointed at himself. "dude. me too."
sunghoon narrowed his eyes. "hold on. when exactly is your birthday?"
"november 11," nari and yoojin answered in unison before kyorin could even open her mouth. jay felt his stomach tighten. how did everyone else know except for him?
jake's jaw dropped, "that's literally so close to mine! mine's on the 15th."
sunghoon shook his head, looking at kyorin in disbelief. "i can't believe we didn't know your birthday was so soon. you never talk about it."
kyorin shrugged, brushing off their reactions. "it's really not a big deal."
nari scoffed, "what the hell? not a big deal? we always do something for your birthday."
"yeah!" yoojin added. "even your brother comes home for it. unless he's skipping this year?"
kyorin hesitated. "i don't know if kijung's coming back this weekend."
