the cabin was silent except for the rhythmic breathing of kyorin, asleep on her side of the room. moonlight slipped through the gaps in the curtains, casting silver streaks across the wooden floor. chaerin lay on her back, eyes fixed on the ceiling, her mind restless.

she exhaled sharply and sat up. sleep was just wasn't in the cards for her tonight and she was acknowledging that.

slipping on her hoodie, she tiptoed out of the cabin, the night air crisp against her skin. the campgrounds were quiet, the faint chirp of crickets the only sound accompanying her steps. her feet pulled her toward the dying bonfire, where embers still smoldered, casting a soft, flickering glow against the darkness.

chaerin sat down on one of the logs, pulling her knees to her chest as she watched the fire slowly fade. she didn't know why she was here, only that the quiet felt more bearable than the mess of thoughts in her head.

she was the one who initiated it. she broke up with jay. she was the one who walked away.

but why did it still hurt? why did it hurt her more than it hurt him?

the crunch of gravel broke through her thoughts. she turned her head slightly to see two figures walking toward her, jake and sunghoon. fresh from the bathrooms, jake was talking, hands moving animatedly, but sunghoon just looked half-asleep, clearly regretting not waiting until morning.

they both spotted her at the same time.

jake hesitated mid-sentence, his brows furrowing. sunghoon, on the other hand, sighed and muttered, "let's just go back."

jake nudged him, "dude, come on."

"she's fine," sunghoon replied, though his voice lacked conviction.

jake shot him a look, "chae's sitting alone by a dying fire in the middle of the night looking like she's about to solve the meaning of life. that's not 'fine.'"

sunghoon groaned, rubbing his face, "we shouldn't get involved."

"she's still our friend," jake countered, already stepping forward. sunghoon sighed again but followed.

"couldn't sleep?" jake asked as they approached.

chaerin blinked up at them, then looked back at the fire, "something like that."

jake plopped down on the log beside her, stretching his legs out. "we were just about to head back, but you looked kinda miserable."

sunghoon sat on the other side, rubbing at his tired eyes, "he means you looked 'thoughtful,'" he corrected.

chaerin huffed a small laugh, "yeah. sure."

they sat there for a moment, the warmth of the fading fire brushing against their skin. it was nice and comfortable to the three of them.
