sometimes i wanna live a quiet
life with you. 'cause you're my
favorite person that i could
never lose.

the soft hum of the car engine filled the space between them, broken only by the occasional tap of jay's fingers against the steering wheel. kyorin sat quietly in the passenger seat, tracing invisible patterns on her knee, her eyes flickering between him and the city lights blurring past them.

jay had been quiet for most of the drive. too quiet. his jaw kept clenching like he was chewing on words, and his grip on the wheel tightened whenever his thoughts got too heavy.

finally, he exhaled, breaking the silence. "so my conversation with chaerin."

kyorin turned her head slightly, trying to hide her expression of curiosity. "yeah?"

jay nodded but didn't immediately continue. instead, he sighed, rubbing his thumb against the leather of the wheel like it might ground him. "she knew. about us."

kyorin's brows lifted slightly in confusion, "how?"

jay let out a humorless chuckle. "i have no clue, i never really got to ask." he hesitated, then glanced at her. "she said she wanted another chance."

a flicker of something crossed kyorin's face, too quick for him to catch but she just tilted her head, waiting. "what did you say?"

"i told her no." his voice was steady, but there was something heavy in the way he said it. "i couldn't do it. not after everything. not after everything i know now."

silence settled between them again, thick and lingering. the car rolled to a stop at a red light, the glow casting jay's face in deep shadows.

"you know," kyorin said after a beat, her tone lighter than before, "i think our plan worked."

jay scoffed, turning his head slightly. "how do you figure?"

"well," she started, shifting in her seat, "chaerin got her answer, didn't she? the point was for you to get her back. she still wants you, you just don't want her anymore. she knows how you feel now. and you got closure." she hesitated, then glanced at him. "we could go back to normal now. you could do whatever you want now, probably move on, you know? i can also just go back to passing my classes."

jay's grip on the wheel tightened. he didn't like that idea. judging by the way her voice faltered slightly, neither did kyorin. yet she still put that option on the table for them, not wanting him to feel trapped with her out of obligation. he didn't turn to look at her when he knew her gaze was on him, waiting for some sign of rejection of the idea but he remained quiet.

for the rest of the drive, silence stretched between them, thick with unspoken things.

by the time jay pulled into her apartment complex, the weight of it was suffocating. he shifted the gear into park, then wordlessly stepped out, moving to the trunk to grab her bag. kyorin followed, the cool night air brushing against her skin as she trailed behind him up the stairs.
