the morning after thanksgiving break carried the crisp chill of early winter, but inside jay's car, the air was warm. his fingers tapped absently against the steering wheel as he waited outside kyorin's house, heart drumming a little too fast for a simple monday morning.

this wasn't anything new. he had been picking her up for school for weeks now but something about today felt different. maybe it was because the break had given him time to think. maybe it was because, for the first time, he wasn't just seeing kyorin as his fake girlfriend. he thought about the kiss they shared and felt his heart skip a beat, remembering how in sync they were. it felt right to him. he wanted more.

when she finally stepped outside, bundled up in a coat with her bag slung over her shoulder, jay's grip tightened on the steering wheel. something about her glowed different, but maybe that was just his head trying to speak things into existence.

she climbed into the passenger seat with a soft sigh, rubbing her hands together for warmth, "good morning."

"morning, angel." jay's voice was steady, but he could feel the nerves creeping in. he put the car into drive, pulling onto the road.

his right hand hovered over the console, fingers twitching. he had spent all weekend thinking about her. sitting next to her, something in his chest urged him to just do it.

so he did.

slowly, hesitantly, his fingers brushed over the back of her hand before settling there. his heart was practically slamming against his ribs, his breath catching as he waited for her to pull away, to say something, to do anything.

instead, kyorin blinked, then glanced down at their hands. then, just as naturally, she turned her palm upward and intertwined their fingers. jay let out a breath he hadn't realized he was holding.

"about time," she murmured, voice laced with amusement.

jay groaned, dropping his head back slightly as he felt himself relax, "don't."

"what?" her lips twitched. "i didn't say anything."

"you implied it."

kyorin squeezed his hand lightly, her smile lingering. "you're so dramatic."

he didn't let go. not even when they parked. not when they walked toward the school. their hands stayed linked. no performance, no audience. just because they wanted to.

lunch came fast. jay and the guys were in their usual corner of the classroom, trays balanced on desks, half listening to practice updates while jake and sunghoon bickered about cleat sizing.
jay was only half-present, eyes flicking to his phone every few seconds.
