the canteen was packed, the air thick with the scent of grilled chicken and mashed potatoes, the usual hum of student chatter amplified by anticipation. dinner trays clattered, forks scraped against plates, and the low buzz of conversation rippled through the room as students sat in clusters, eagerly awaiting the results of the scavenger hunt.
at one particular table, kyorin, jay, sunghoon, yoojin, jake, and heeseung sat together, their trays half-empty, some having barely touched their food in favor of the excitement. the table besides them sat chaerin and jina, along with jina's cabin mates. chaerin couldn't help but take notice as to how close they all were, feeling like she's been replaced. after all, originally it was her and jina sitting in the spot where kyorin and her friends were.
"i'm just saying," jake spoke up, gesturing with a roll, "if we don't win, this whole thing was rigged."
sunghoon scoffed, "you literally contributed nothing except bad directions."
"excuse me," jake retorted, pointing a butter knife at him. "i was moral support. someone had to keep the team spirit alive. a lot of the items nari found, i was with her."
"to be fair, i found them. i just asked you to get it for me," nari corrected, making jake pout.
jake shrugged. "i still contributed that's all that matters."
before sunghoon could fire back, their teacher, mr. choi, cleared his throat at the front of the room, signaling the announcements were about to begin. jay nudged kyorin under the table. she glanced at him, already knowing what he was thinking.
"we heading out?" she murmured.
jay smirked. "before we die of boredom."
without another word, the two stood up, quietly slipping toward the side doors. chaerin, who had been absentmindedly stirring her soup, caught the movement from the corner of her eye. her grip on her spoon tightened as she watched them leave. just as she turned back to her tray, she heard soft giggles from the table from behind her.
yoojin and nari were whispering to each other, grinning.
"oh my god," nari muttered, nudging yoojin, "they're so obvious."
chaerin's stomach twisted. before she could dwell on it, mr. choi's voice rang out over the canteen.
"and the winners of the scavenger hunt are... cabin 27!"
their table erupted into cheers.
"let's go!" jake yelled, nearly knocking his tray over.
sunghoon and heeseung high-fived, while nari and yoojin squealed in excitement. even jay and kyorin's absence wasn't enough to dampen their energy.
