jay sat in the stiff hospital chair, his body slouched as exhaustion weighed heavy on his limbs. the steady beeping of the heart monitor and the faint hum of the air conditioning filled the quiet room. his mom was sitting up in bed, looking better than she had in weeks. there was more color in her face, her dark eyes shining a little brighter as she spoke with his dad.
"the doctor said my white blood cell count is improving," his mom said, her voice lighter than it had been in a long time. "i think this round of chemo actually helped."
jay watched as his dad let out a deep breath, nodding as he rubbed his face with one hand. "that's good. that's really good," he murmured. his dad wasn't an emotional man, but even he couldn't hide the relief settling in his shoulders.
jay's lips twitched into a small smile. for the first time in months, it felt like they were getting some good news. maybe things were finally turning around. he looked at his mom, the strongest person he knew, and felt a warmth spread in his chest.
"you hear that, mom? you're gonna be back to nagging me about eating my vegetables in no time," he teased, leaning forward to rest his arms on the edge of her bed. his mom laughed, a sound that had been missing from their home for too long. "oh, you bet i will. someone has to make sure you're not living off of instant ramen and energy drinks."
jay grinned, but then, as if his own mind was against him, the memory of chaerin's voice, sharp and filled with frustration, echoed in his head.
"i can't keep up with this relationship when all i do is wonder where the fuck my boyfriend is all the time."
his stomach twisted, and the warmth he'd felt moments ago faded into something cold. his smile faltered. he knew he should've handled things differently. maybe if he had just told her.
but what was the point? every time he tried, she brushed him off.
"oh, i'm studying. we can talk later tho."
later never came. and eventually, he figured she didn't really want to know. so he stopped trying.
his mom must have noticed the change in his expression because she reached out, resting a weak but comforting hand over his. "jongseong, what's wrong?"
jay shook his head quickly, forcing a chuckle as he squeezed her hand. "nothing, mom. just tired."
she gave him a knowing look, but didn't push. she never did. unlike chaerin. his dad stood, stretching his back with a tired sigh. "you should go home and get some rest, son. you didn't sleep at all last night."
jay checked his phone out of habit. no new messages. not even from kyorin.
"yeah... maybe," he mumbled, but he knew the moment he got back home, he wouldn't be able to sleep. his mind would keep replaying the conversation in the school garden. the way she wouldn't look at him. the way she pulled her hands away.
